I'm going on 7500 mile intervals on Mobil 1 and factory filters. My truck is used for running service calls. I start and stop all day and with traffic in Austin it's some of the worst driving conditions.. You guys think that 7500 is good or should I go 5000? Also I was reading about the Mustang 5.0 engine not having an EGR is this true on the 5.0 for our trucks too, if so wouldn't that keep the oil cleaner too?
Best way to find out is do a UOA from Blackstone labs. I would *think* with Mobil 1 you should be OK but I don't live in Austin either.
As for EGR, the only modern engines that have EGR now a days tend to be diesels. Variable Cam timing in gasoline engines is used to keep the exhaust valve open a little longer so that the engine sucks back some of the exhaust it expelled. So I highly doubt the 5.0, 3.7, 3.5 have any EGR, heck, my 5.4 doesn't have an egr either.
I bought the extended warranty on my 2010 5.4 and oil changes are covered in the cost ,so they will only pay for so many oil changes and that is based on 12,000 klicks between changes. If I want my oil changed more frequently I will have to cover that cost!

Since the owners manual has a open answer to one size fits all then I'd consider what the average maybe. My 2003 PSD says 7500 miles. Of course I have a by-pass and use Donaldson oil filters so my oil change is annual even though UOA say it's good for another 2-3k or so. That being said after my first 3k on the Larry it will be Amsoil 5-20w and the Donaldson oil filter and will go with once a year oil change. I'll get that ironed out after the 3k oil change and the results from Blackstone.
So did yah git ur answer.... For those not accustomed to using synthetics and the long durations it will take a while to get comfy with the new paradigm.....
For some light reading here is a link form a 2009 article: from Lubes'n Greases
There is another article but I'm having trouble find it. It was an annual report on the state of the fast lube shops. The gist of it was that the 3k mile oil changes was more about profits then what was good for the vehicle in an era where the auto maker is already recommending a 7.5k average oil change. So here we have marketing forcing playing on the minds of those seeking a middle ground of good maintenance versus wasting funds on needless oil changes.
If you have the time maybe you can find it but I think it was written in 2006 or 2007 I have let my subscription lapse but this is a good FREE magazine.
I have heard that oil change indicator lights are based on crankshaft sensors counting, much like that of an hour meter... I'm not entirely sure... just speculation.
After my second oil change at 12,000 klicks my dealership Dearborn Ford in Kamloops scheduled me in for my next one in 8,000 klicks. Bonus my Sales Manager bought me a new license plate mount which I broke when my truck was almost brand new,Thanks Justin Gyger
10k seems excessive. a more reasonable, and realistic number would be 5-7.5k
provided of course that you only use Motorcraft Filters. Aftermarket filters just don't measure up to the quality of the motorcraft filter. The check valve alone will keep your Ford motor running happily for many thousands of miles.
I'm more of a 3k changer personally. Oil is cheap, motors aren't. My PSD will get oil at 5-7.5k intervals, but the 5.4 gets them every 3k period. I know I could go farther, but I'd rather spend the $25 and have clean oil than try to squeeze a little more mileage
I used to be a 3000 guy. But with 7 qts of oil, I run it to about 6000 or so. That's usually when my 2009 has burned a quart or so. Rather than add oil, I just have it changed at that point.
No really, that burned qt doesn't bother me a bit. <grrrr>
