SAS Questions...

I have an 87 ford f-150 an am looking to do a SAS on it soon...my first question is what years should my donor truck be? either Dana 44 or Dana 60 Either one...My next question is should i keep my coils or would a Leaf spring switch be easier? My third is i am planing to lift my truck six more inches what all parts should i get from the donor truck?...I've read some where that a 78-79 bronco front end would bolt right up they called it a one day job yet it seems to take alot more than just bolting on...Any help is appreciated...

read these two threads to get a little more insight on what all you'll need and to see how much fab is involved, and then feel free to ask some questions if they aren't covered in here. first one is a d60 swap into a 78-79 bronco, but it's basically the same swap. 2nd one is a d44 swap into a later model f150.

and this one.

all found in the tech sticky that says "read first" at the top of the page.

Come back with any questions you may have. Im sure I could do it in a day if pushed but how long it takes you would greatly depend on your level of experience and tools you have handy.

then you'd be pissed to know he cut the thing up and made something similar to what Dave has.

75-79 f150 front d44's and 78-79 bronco d44's. any ford d60f from 77.5-79 would be best and easiest, but also more expensive. i'd probably look for an 85.5-91.5 kingpin d60 honestly, but a 92-97 balljoint d60 would be my 2nd choice for cheapness and availability, and lastly would be a 99 and up super duty d60, but they are a metric bolt pattern and unit bearings so you'd have to get a matching metric sterling rear axle and metric rims.

what size tires do you plan on running and will you actually be driving off road? if so, what kind of wheeling?

I'm running 33x12.50's right now and plan to go bigger to 35 or bigger after i lift it...the ttb axle is not worth a fart in a whirlwind period and will be worth less than that when i go bigger...as far as wheeling goes nothing serious i'll use it to get some firewood down off the mountain when i can...but the ball joints are going out on my ttb axle and instead of spending money on it I'd rather invest in a good front end...i've looked high and low for a donor truck and cant seem to get my hands on any thing thats worth it but the new info will allow me to expand my search

thanks

if 37's or less are what you're after and just a mild amount of mild offroading it really isn't practical to swap to a solid d44, but it's your truck, and your money, have at it i guess
