all i have is a cheap scanner and the one i have acess to at work doesnt give you eot. i plan to buy a sgII later as well as add mechanical gauges at a later date. i just bought the truck less than a week ago with the intention of not having to work on it as much since its supposed to be tougher than gas engines but after reading through the tech folders you guys have got me scared that this truck is gonna start falling apart any day now. so id like to check the difference in temps. with the scanner i used at work i know the the truck is running about 183 while movimg and about 199 sitting at idle for coolant so my question is can i use a thermal gun to check the oil temp at the oil pan to try and make myself feel better about this truck or will that not be a good compareson
what temp do they usually run? ambient around here is 95-100 with 100% humidity. i thought 199 was good.
i just tried useing the thermal gun. i got 170 at top of radiator 190 at thermostat houseing and 170 to 189 on oil pand depending on where i aimed the gun
that 183 reading was not long after startup. i drove about 120 miles yesterday with it hooked up in and out of the rain the temp usualy varried between 188-198

oh well if thats the case the thermistate is fine
just need something alittle more accurate for the oil temp especialy if you have an 05 and up those egr coolers suck
dont stress to much about it most people that come to sites like this have problems and you dont here to much from all those people that never have any issues with there ride
IMHO theres alot more good ones then bad ones
for the time being just keep an eye on it and check the coolant every once in awhile see if its lost any coolant and make shure you dont see oil in the coolant bottle
some are starting to use an android app on there phone with a bluetooth at the obdII port I dont know to much about these but they say it only around 50.00 for the stuff if you already have the phone and does the same or more as SGII
I use the SGII and its been great it will get your ECT and EOT

I'll give you as an example of what temps you should see empty. Today driving at 65 mph. in 95 degree heat my coolant was 194 and the oil was 199 as averages.
If you plan on installing aftermarket gauges after buying a Scangauge II, remember the SGII uses the factory senders. Those are the same senders the ECU uses to manage your engine. The same senders used to determine Ford specs for ECT/EOT deltas.
Aftermarket gauges use after market senders in locations.. That means aftermarket gauges will display temperatures different from what you'll see on your Scangauge. As an example, The typical aftermarket sender location on the transmission will read 10-15F lower than the factory sender location. (I have no idea as to the differences you'll see in water and oil temperatures.)
Since a Scanguage II displays the same temps the ECU uses to manage the engine and the same temps a Ford dealer will see when diagnosing your truck, I see little point in installing aftermarket gauges except of course EGT.
Oh, yeah. Fuel pressure. Personally, I'm drawing the line at my Scangauge II. Monitoring everything it can read on my 6.0 has just about put me into clinical paranoia. Especially the FICM voltages. It's sort of like passing by a grizzly car accident. You really don't want to look, but you look anyway.
Anyone who hasn't monitored EOT/ECT should be aware that the delta needs to be measured on FLAT terrain. Even slight grades (either up or down) will affect water temperature before oil and cause you to believe your delta is bigger.
So, what's a thermistate? For a while, I thought it was thermostat misspelled. But, now I've seen it spelled that way many times. Could it be a sender or the part inside the sender that reacts to temperature?
+2 on the paranoia.I'm constantly waiting for that magic 15* spread so I can start my flushing fiasco all over again.I watch the sgll more than the road for god sakes.......

That's exactly why I velcroed mine to the top of the dash above the left vent. I've got a Kenwood single DIN stereo in my truck and the SGII fits perfectly into the now empty space below it, but I didn't want to be looking away from the road that much. On top of the dash is better as I can see it out of my peripheral vision. It's almost like a free heads up display! Well, not really. But it is a lot better than staring at the middle of your dash all the time. I fear the head-on fiasco over the flushing fiasco.
Decades ago, I became jealous of non-car guy drivers. Here I am monitoring everything, listening for the slightest odd noises and then I see this 1977 Chevrolet Caprice with 200,000 miles and no maintenance since 1986 chugging along. You know those cars that look and sound like crap, but you NEVER see them stranded on the side of the road.
