Depends on how bad they are! My heads lifted on my way to a camping site about 1/2 way to it - 150 miles from home. Took it easy, weren't many high hills. Got there and came home, everything was fine. Didn't blow coolant again.......

There really isn't a magic millage number. I wouldn't drive any amount of miles with a bad oil cooler, or EGR cooler. At least not unless I was out of town, in the middle of nowhere, and had no choise. At that point I would just drive to the closest town, and get her fixed. I for sure wouldn't pull anything with it like that. You take a big risk of really costing yourself a lot of money by driving with bad egr/oil coolers.

While on vacation I noticed Hi Boost in around 30 to 35PSI, now warrenty company says if caused by bad EGR Cooler they won't cover repairs, When I noticed prob I was 700 miles from home and had to drive it back with the Hi Boost condition happening at times. I know that bad EGR/OIL Cooler would cook pretty fast, so think it may be head gasket problem. Then warrenty will cover it.

I had gauges and was able to WATCH temps....AND I knew it was mostly downhill to home. AND I knew it didn't get beyond normal temps NOT pulling the trailer. Was I "lucky"...I don't think so, I was "lucky" it happened when and where it was!

Didn't lose much coolant maybe a half inch in degass bottle. I also watched the temps and kept EGT below 1050 degrees as much as I could, pulled from Hawthorne, NV back to Seattle area, up 395 to 97 North then across to I-5 to home. Talked with my diesel Tech, he says oil/egr cooler are okay is a head gasket that went. Now to get it fixed.

I think that oil temp and coolant temp are more important than EGT when you are concerned about head gaskets and oil/EGR coolers.

Keeping EGT down will help keep ECT and EOT down as well as keep the cooler temps down and keep the intake temps down through lower exhaust gas temps that are recirculated. This will help keep head temps down which can only help the HG's. So, if you know you have an oil cooler issue but can't get it fixed immediately, then keeping EGTs down as much as possible can only help. At least that's my view. However, until you get the oil cooler issue resolved, you're on borrowed time.

I agree Frank, I didn't say that the EGT was not useful! BUT - if I had to choose, I would rather see the oil and coolant temps specifically. They are a more direct indication of an issue. EGT's can be 1350 degrees and not be a problem. Some people say 1500 degrees for short bursts are not a problem! So, how low is appropriate??? If you know you have problems w/ head gaskets and/or oil/EGR cooler, you would be best advised not to drive it. If you have to drive it, then go easy. I don't need an EGT gauge to know how to drive easy. I do know that you can EASILY excede critical temperature parameters at NORMAL EGTs.
