Ford Scorpio V10
I got a radical idea that's been brewing inside my head for quite some time now.
Fitting a 6.8l V10 in a European Ford Scorpio.
Do you guys know of any site where I can find technical information about this engine? I don't know the engine very well, so I have to learn more about it..
How easy is it to get hold of damaged vehicles in the US? Shipping to Europe? I obviously don't need the entire car, only the engine, transmission, and drivetrain.
Do you guys know how heavy it is? How BIG it is..?
Also, do you know of anyone who has Supercharged the V10?
If I'm not totally mistaken it comes with a auto-tranny, any manual gearboxes that are bolt-on..?

Welcome from the U.S. !!!
The V10 wieghs about 640LBS/ 1408KG
The auto trans is LONG and you would need a drive shaft/rear end that would handle all the torque
Besause the V10 is longer than wide and the length of the transmission, I think you would have a lot of problems stuffing the entire power train into such a small wheel based auto like the Scorpio. Also the weight will cause you much grief trying to find a set of springs to keep the front off the ground.
Lastly any number of small V8 "crate" motors can be purchased with HP from 225 up to 600 and be much easier to get shipped to Europe.....
In the long run you would be better off spending all that money on making the current Scorpio motor a serious HP machine as today the choices are only limited by the amount of money you have to spend.

I think you had your conversion backwards. 640 pounds = 291 Kg.
I want a 6-speed manual box anyway... I think a Borg Warner would do quite nicley.
The V10 is a 20 valver right..?
I think that if they can fit v12's in BMW 3-series I can fit a v10 in a Scorpio. I may be difficult, but that only makes it more interesting!
I imagine that I will have to change the gearbox.

Ford does offer a 6-speed manual for the V-10, but I imagine it wouldn't fit your application very well. The 1st gear is a big time granny gear, and would be pretty much worthless in a Scorpio. I believe the tranny is made by ZF.
The V-10 is a 20 valver (one intake and exhaust valve per cylinder)
All vehicles that Ford puts the V-10 in have solid rear axles.
If you are still serious about this endeavour, there is a V-10 on ebay right now. I am not sure if you will be able to bid on it from Norway though. Good luck!

The hight of the engine from air intake down to the bottom of the oil filter seems to be VERY deep, no tape with me, but I estimate al least 3 feet!!
I say again, it looks like my motor on the drivers side is at least 3 feet tall from the bottom of the oil filter to the top of the air inlet, go look for your selves and see if I am all wet.
I could build a new inlet of course.. how tall is it from the bottom of the sump to the top of the headcovers? It is a 60 degree V10 right? This smells of a Custom bonnet..

rabidsnowmobiler: do you the full name of that gearbox? At which ratios? I imagine i could use a 9" motorsport diff from a Sierra Cosworth. It should take some battering..
Or maybe a Quaife ATB. They're also known for handling Cosworth's pushing out up to 750 BHP..Is the V-10 a pushrod engine or a OHC?

thanks

I lost my link when changing from Win 98 to Win XP so you will have to do a google search. There is a lot of that kind of info for all the Modular Ford motors out on the web.
Retro fitting a pre 99 V10 may be possible, I don't know much about the early motors and their controls. I do know that a 1999-2004 V10 w/ZF 6sp into your 89 Pickup will be a royal PITA. Nobody makes adapter kits so the physical placement will be totaly up to you for fabrication. But the bigger problem is fuel and electrical interfacing with your truck.
These are computer controlled motors and the Power Control Module (PCM) requires signals from the Auto trans (if equiped), Fuel system, brake system (ABS if equiped), vapor system, Vehicle speed sensor (VSS(tone wheel on the differential ring gear)), the Air Bag system, and seat restraint system. Many of these can be eliminated or fooled but it is a real pain to get the info on what wire wants what signal level and duration.
Just getting the whole wiring out of donor truck will drive you nuts and don't forget that most all the instrument cluster signals on the V10 donor truck come from the PCM.
For the time money and effort you will be happier and faster with a good hopped up crate motor and associated go fast goodies.
The V10 is a torque maker but still only 295-310 HP at 415cubic inches. Many crate motors make better HP and torque for $3700-$8000 and are bolt in swaps.
Thanks for the info. I figured that would probly be the case but i just couldn't pass on the idea without doing some investigation. I've been looking into the crate motors but i've not found one that i've liked yet.
thanks
