Bad steering

I have a 2004 F350. It seems to be leaking power steering fluid and whines when i turn it and if pressed to hard on the brake pedal its makes a whining noise to. The steering is super loose when going down the road. and last it doesnt always want to go into gear from park.. any ideas on what might be going wrong????

Thanks Much

Try putting in fresh power steering fluid...maybe run a lil higher air pressure in front tires the loose steering might indicate wornout parts jack up the front and try moving tires by grabbing them with hands in 9 and 3 oclock position alternate left right then grab with hands at 12 and 6 oclock do same thing try to make tire move if you get a lot of movement you got worn out parts the gear thing I don't know

Where is the leak coming from? Have you looked under the truck?

Bad steering

I have looked under the truck but is hard for me too see where it is leaking from... looks like it is coming from the pump area or the steering box.
I am more concerned with the truck not wanting to go into gear..

Not coming out of park can be a few things.

Parking on too high of a hill, without using the parking brake.
Linkage needs adjusting.
Linkage cable fraying, needs replacing.
Worn parking pin in the transmission.

Just to list a few.

P.S. power steering fluid levels have nothing to do with the transmission, or linkage shifting.

Is their a connection between power steering and tranny? Lift and large tires will make it a bit loose...all the parts greased up on front end maybe steering stabilizer is worn out

How hard is it to ajust the linkage or are those suggestions better off to take it to a shop?

Your truck is gettin on in years, and those over sized tires don't help.
I'm in the middle of replacing my steering box with one from Red Head Steering, while trying to cure my wondering steering on the highway. Heard lots of good things about them.

Did you put PS fluid in the pump or ATF? Hydroboost units nowadays are using ATF in them. Or atleast every reman unit I have bought has shipped with ATF in them.

Over in the 7.3 Forum another user stated he had a leaky PS pump and it turned out to be the o-rings on the line coming from the pump to the hydro unit. Worth checking out.

Also, to take some of that slop out of your steering, x2 on greasing all the joints in the steering linkage. Also, check out this thread for tightening up the internals of the PS gear box: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ightening.html

One final note: a fellow PSD owner and friend told me that trucks with lifts and tires may have issues with wearing out the upper trac bar mount. The issue is the bolt that holds the trac bar to the mount starts to wear the bolt hole out of round. His suggested fix was to weld large high grade washers on to the trac bar mount to fix the out of roundness.

Does the problem with shifting out of park seem to happen when you are parked against a bump chock in parking lots only or will it happen if you stop with nothing against the tires?
