Yeah I must say I find all the E4OD hatred interesting. But it's also interesting that many of the "e4od went to crap" threads are also ones where they drove with the error code for days/weeks/months. Local farmer here has an E4OD in his 94 powerstroke and it's the only thing that hasn't given them grief yet. Over 500,000 miles on it, original transmission. And it'd drive 250-500 miles a week with a 25-30 foot cattle trailer loaded full of heifers for years
Now the 700R4 trans in our Chevy.... THAT is a turd of a tranny.
And don't get me wrong, I agree that there's less to go wrong with a manual trans. But they're not bulletproof, I've had plenty of issues with manual transmissions in their own right as well as automatics.
I do say this, I like Automatic transmissions, the C6 in my dad's IDI has over 500k on it too. My Ranger, well....haha....I have done things to that transmission that I shouldnt have done and it has never once complained at all.
The biggest thing with the e4od is the sensers that tell it proper shift points are all old electrical components fail replace all of the old ones that are easy external ones and it will shift like new in most cases I get more trucks cheap because of a cheap sensor no one cares to replace
Well I find that to be true, but it Ford has been known for YEARS for the simplicity of its older vehicles, then they introduce all these sensors and things and you have people with dead in the water vehicles and they cant do anything because of these sensors nobody cares about.
the only thing smiple about the e40d is when it craps it craps BIG TIME the c6 t19 and zf5 are simple trannys but the e40d is in no way simple it computer control for gosh sakes
we see more my e40d has tanken a crap on me thered them any other type imho only when the winter rolls around twe see more threads about gp them e40ds
What ya gotta realize joe, is that nobody is gonna post up that their not having problems with their E4OD and life is just grand. Their only gonna post if they have a problem. My E4OD has 370k hard miles, all trouble free.

I have to disagree here too. I think you can get better mileage with the E4OD than a 5 or 4 spd, thanks the the E4ODs 27% OD and locking torque converter. Once a 5 spd is in 5th gear and an E4OD is in 4th gear with the torque converter locked, theirs no slippage from the tq converter and the rpms are lower with the auto due to the better OD.
Idk John I have always gotten better mileage even while N/A than my buddy did, his F-250 just always got 17/19 and if I drive careful I get 18~19/20~21.
The bit that I've been driving the cc with E4OD and 3.55 gears, I seem to be running close to 20mpg. Haven't done anything to the truck since I got it other than a fuel filter. Needs an alignment badly, should have an air filter, but I'm holding off since I'm hoping to put a turbo on it soon.
With some maintenance and upgrades, I'm hoping to hit low 20's for mileage with it.
Yup, that's the New Baumann transmission control computer. David85 is running an earlier version on his E4OD and I'll be picking one up in a few weeks to swap in my E4OD. Recoup some of my loss from swapping to 4.10's in place of the 3.55's with my C6. Though C6 with 4.10's still gets worlds better than my 5.8L gasser got with 3.55's and a C6! The Baumann will run me almost as much as what I'd need to get for the OEM computer, so I figure I might as well have programmable shifts etc.
Well why not then. If it saves you some money in the long run do it. I am always a fan of saving a little here and there because it will add up eventually.
The E4OD needs all of it's sensors to be working properly for the tranny to function right. since you have a new VSS you should check your TPS and RPM sensor. There are also ~6 electrical connectors that send electrical signal to this tranny make sure they are clean and in good condition. i believe 4 of which are by the fire wall under the brake booster. two more on each side of the tranny.
I know how you feel about this tranny. when i first got my truck there were times that if i had some C4 i would have put if on my tranny and blown the whole thing sky high but i did not and now it works good. i did not have to spend a lot of money either. you just have to keep at it. dont take it to the ford dealer either. there are other tranny shops that will scan for codes for free.
