89 - Gear Indicator

89 - Gear Indicator
I have an 89, 351/C6, with tilt column. The shifter indicator has never been right since I bought the truck in 2004. It shows in between reverse and nuetral, when in park, and the rest are off by the same. But, it never bothered me enough to try and fix it. Count the detents you know where you are.
A couple of things have changed:
First, the girl freind is starting to drive it. And, it bothers her.
Second, the ignition switch went, so I have things torn apart enough to get at it. thus, this seems like an opportune moment to see if I can fix the shift indicator.
I looked in both my Haynes and Chilton manuals and they don't have anything on it.
Can anyone give me instructions on how to adjust it.

Well, on some trucks, you pull the panel that goes under the column and look up...you will see a small white wheel. This is normally on the passenger side of the column, close to the column. This adjusts to align the indicator which is controlled by a tread like line. Not sure on the 89 vintage.....the '93 Ranger I had was this way as is a lot of newer trucks.

On my 90 there is a small wire that leads from the shift indicator to the column, you have to remove the cover from the column. The wire is inside of a white tube, you adjust it by moving the white piece of plastic up or down that's screwed into the column.
The biggest problem is that the wire use to be greased inside the tube, the grease dries and the spring inside your cluster is too weak to pull it back into position, making it so you can never get it right. I wish I could find a replacement for mine, the plastic hose cover thingie broke.
