Brake Light Issue

I have a 2002 Explorer and the brake lights will not go out. I did some reasearch on this and concluded it must be the brake light switch. I removed the switch and the lights went out, so I figured I found the problem.

I read on here that the original brake light switch was dis****inued, but the switch from a 2002 Windstar (part F4862 from AZ) can be used. Several people here have stated that they have had success doing this.

I wasn't as successful. I bought two switches and neither worked. In fact, I couldn't get the truck out of park with these plugged in.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what else could be causing the issue?

Thanks.

Did you have the switches installed when you tried them, or just plugged in? Why didn't you go with the redesigned switch from the parts store? Yeah, you need to wire in a new connector, but that's not too bad. The redesigned switch from O'Reilly Auto Parts was just under $15 and came with everything needed to install it. I opted to solder the wires though and cover with adhesive lined shrink sleeving, but if you're not comfortable with a soldering iron, the switch comes with butt connectors.

I figured that I go the easiest route and replace a part that that was close to (probably the same) as the original.

I installed the one switch and just plugged in the second.

I guess I just need to opt for that redesigned part...

I replaced the old switch with the newly designed one without any luck. The brake lights currently don't work and I cannot get the truck to shift out of park.

Does anyone have another suggestion on what the problem could be?

Thanks,
Scott

If the switch does not power up the brake circuit the park lock solenoid will also be dead... You need to verify that you have power at switch and that the switch is working properly (adjusted).... Philip

If I put pressure on the switch the lights will come on, but they stay on.

This is the same story as with Windstar switch I originally used. I had to adjust the part so that the contacts inside touched before I could shift the truck out of park. However, the brake lights stay on when the contacts touch.

The switch should be adjusted so that the lights come on when the pedal is depressed, that way the shifter will release when brake pedal is depressed (foot on).... Philip

I'm bumping this tread with the hope of more suggestions (before I go to the dealership).

I tired 3 F4862 replacement switches, making adjustments to the contacts. I even tried sanding down the contacts (or what remained) on the original switch.

I also tried the redesigned switch without success.

There has to be an another issue. Maybe it's me...?

Does anyone have other suggestions?

So to recap, all three replacement switches do not seem to release? You plug in the switch and the brake lights are out. As soon as you apply pressure to the switch the lights stay on and do not extinguish until the switch is disconnected? Does the same happen if you try the switch when it's not installed on the brake pedal assembly?

Correct, the lights only come on when I apply pressure with my hand (and the two contacts touch). As soon as I release the pressure they go out.

It's the same whether or not the switch is on the assembly.

That sounds like how the switch is supposed to operate. In post #6 above though you stated the lights stay on, even after the pressure is released.

If the switch works fine when off the brake pedal assembly but seems to "stick" when installed, I'm wondering if maybe the bushings are not getting installed correctly.
