This is more of an FYI than a question. I have a '98 Explorer XLT V8 and this morning a stranger flagged me down to let me know that I had no brake lights at all. I searched through the forums here and found a few threads about the issue that led in many different directions. I just wanted to put in my 2 cents regarding my vehicles symptoms and the very easy fix.
SYMPTOMS:
1. No brake lights at all (no left, right or center).
2. Bulbs all OK.
3. Stock wiring, no funny workarounds.
4. Turn signals both work.
5. Lights are on with headlamps.
6. Lights flash when alarm turned on/off.
The FIX:
1. Stop light switch located on the brake pedal, under the dash. Motorcraft Part # SW5219 $16.56 at my local Ford parts shop. Five minutes to take off the old and five minutes to put on the new one.
Good post missviv2. Coincidently a co-worker had the same problem a few weeks back. I told him to check the switch after checking the things you mentioned. He found that he could wiggle the switch and cause the brake lights to flicker on/off. Replaced the switch and he's good to go.
It's located on the arm of the brake pedal. Mine had a yellow pin holding it on. It has an electrical connection on the bottom part of the switch, which has a release on the right hand side. Be careful of a small (1/2" diameter) black sleeve that comes off with the switch. You will need this when you put the new switch back on as you do not get a new one with the new switch.
For a picture of the switch, go here: http://www.motorcraft.com/catalog.do?goto=fullline
Enter the information for your truck (you should have the same switch). Choose "Braking, Friction" for the Category and "Master Cylinder, Brake Light Switch, Power Booster & ABS" for the group. Click Lookup and you should be given a list of parts. Click on the "i" for SW5219 to get a picture of the switch.
I had a 94 Ranger with the same problem. Very common on them and Explorer's. Easy to fix and you should check all your lights at every oil change to be sure....
