Dome light issue

I did search first. I have a small issue with my interior dome light. I'm sure it's a common enough problem and is probably easily remedied. The dome light will come on if I open the passenger door or if I turn it on with the head lamp switch. The map lights only work if the passenger door is open. It doesn't matter if the truck is running or not. I tried swapping the door switches and there is no change.

I don't know if this matters or not, but the door chime/buzzer never sounds and there is an aftermarket stereo in it. I have no idea how the stereo is wired as it was in the truck when I bought it.

Any insight to this problem will be greatly appreciated. Normally I wouldn't really care if it worked properly or not, but I would like to install my Explorer overhead console this weekend and I was planning on grabbing power for the lights from this existing circuit.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Your map lights should work doors open or not. Use a meter to check your ds pin switch just to narrow things down.

I have a Pioneer in mine but I did purchase a Pioneer to Ford harness adapter. No cut & splice. My door chime sometimes works, sometimes not. Key in that is, or headlights on. Sometimes I open the doors and listen to the radio and it won't come on unless I wiggle the ignition switch a little. It never comes on when the ps door is open though but the dome light and cargo light always come on if either door is open.

You most likely have a corroded connection somewhere and you'll have to track it down with a meter or test light.

Problem solved. Under the driver's side sill panel, there is a section of wire for the dome and map lights split into two. This junction on both wires was corroded. Redid the connections and everything works properly. Now I can wire in the harness for the Explorer overhead console.

I didn't take pics of the corroded wires. I will be taking the trim off again today because I have to splice in the wiring harness for the Explorer console (I will be taking pics of this). I can also take a pic of where the factory splices are. It's funny, the factory splices didn't look messed up on the outside, but when I cut the wires they were green/black and fuzzy inside. It doesn't surprise me that they were rotten, because the whole sill channel was full of sandy silt type stuff. It was almost like cement, I had to chisel the wiring out with a screwdriver.

I'd check the other side as well if you haven't already, might prevent future problems or even a fire.

Also, please document the console install-us Ford guys and gals love the custom stuff!

I actually did check the passenger side. I don't think anyone ever sat there. There was literally nothing under the sill plate.

I do plan on it. Today will be the wiring, or as much of it as I can get done with a toddler helping me.
