1996 EB auto with 5.8, 4x4. 115,000 miles, power windows, NO Rust, leather, etc...
Guy wants 1500....thinking I'm gonna buy it, clean it up a little and sell it.
I had an 88 and loved the truck, sold it for a 98 Expedition, etc..so I know what they are capable of.
Part of me wants to keep but but I have no need for it...
Anyway, what are your thoughts on $1500 (if it is mechanically sound), anything obvious I should look for.... (oil in coolant, trans/axle's, diffs leaks etc...)
How much do you think I could sell it for (cleaned up?)
I bought it instead, after he said he didn't want it.
Joe (the OP) drove it...had some concerns so backed off. He told me he wasn't buying it, so I went and checked it out today. It has been repainted, but the seller has owned it since it was a year old w/9k miles on it and said it's never had any body damage or rust repair...the paint was fading so he had it repainted.
I drove it around the block and it ran fine...idles smooth, but Joe and the seller both said that once warmed up and out on the highway, it starts losing power. The seller said the fuel filter has never been changed. So I'll start there. If it still acts up, I'll check the exhaust for good output (possible clogged cat), then fuel pressure.
It needs a new fuel pump, you can get a good one at Ford, I did.
But it's not a necessity right away the old pump will keep going for a while, just not at high speed, it's still good out on the trail when you're not flowing a lot of fuel thru the pump. There's a valve in the pump that adds back pressure, then afterawhile it gets pushed out of position so the fuel pressure drops and with that the speed drops.
Then magically the valve replaces itself and it works alright, until it doesn't.
I've had a few other than Ford, but I'd have to say the majority have been Fords. My great uncle had a Ford dealership in southeastern Kentucky from the mid '30's to the early 80's. My father worked for him for several years...so I've probably been around more Fords than anything else, especially Mustangs.
I'd love to add a new 5.0, preferably a Boss 302 to the stable... but I'm afraid I'd have to give up the Shelby for it.
for that price you cant turn it down, the body looks good,id scoop it up in a heatbeat. the paint looks like it needs a little tlc and i bet it would be shining like a show car
It's official...it's all mine! Transferred the title and tagged it today.
Changed the fuel filter...still acting up.
So I ordered a new Motorcraft fuel pump with hanger and Motorcraft sending unit (fuel gauge not working). May sound crazy, but I went ahead and ordered a new fuel tank and straps while I was at it. Figured, why not? As long as I was gonna drop the tank, might as well put a new one in place. Might be a lot of crud in the original tank and the new one didn't cost that much.
It kinda snowballed...the fuel gauge isn't working, so I figured if I drop the tank for that, might as well replace the pump assembly, and if I was doing that, why not install a new tank too...peace of mind is worth a lot to me.
And for what the truck cost, I figured I could afford to invest a little in it.
