I had a brake line fail last week while I was on vacation. We were traveling on the interstate and about four cars in front of me locked up their brakes. I got on my brakes hard and was going to stop, but the van in rear of me hit my rear bumper. As soon as they hit me, my pedal went almost to the floor. There was minimal damage to my truck and the van that hit me. I limped to the next exit about a mile away and pulled in a truck stop. The brake line that goes from the proportioning valve to the left front caliper hose failed. There is a short section of steel braided hose in the pipe just after it exits the proportioning valve. The steel braid had a tear and the hose ruptured. There was an Advance Auto parts nearby and I was able to replace the hose section with a steel line and a couple of compression unions.
I'm not sure if I want to (or need to) replace the repaired line with an OEM brake line. I don't see why the line needs a flexible hose. The proportioning valve and connection at the frame don't move. Also, it concerns me that the line ruptured in the first place, maybe it was already damaged?? There are two other flexible lines exiting the proportioning valve also. Has anybody seen any problems with these?
