'99 Ranger VSS/ABS issues
The truck belongs to a friend of a friend type deal. Transmission broke the rev band, and I offered to rebuild it if he pulled it out. After he put it back in, the truck would not shift, speedo stays at 0, ABS light is on, OD starts flashing and throws P0500 code.
Also, putting the shifter into D will not engage forward gears. You must shift into 1 or 2.
Of course they are blaming the issue on me, since I just rebuilt the trans (though I did not pull it or re-install). To keep a friendship, I am trying to fix it for them.
I replaced the speed sensor in the rear with a new one and the issue was still there. The part was a Borg Warner, and I have had issues with non-motorcraft parts before, so I replaced it again with a new Motorcraft this morning.
All of the issues are still there.
So, where should I look next? Trans control module?
The P0500 says the computer is unhappy with the rear differential mounted ABS speed sensor output PID & yes it's output is also used to drive the speed-o & the computer uses it to know when to have the tranny shift, cruise control also uses it's output, along with the rear ABS.
SO, were they having this problem Before the reverse band broke & the tranny was removed????
If so, maybe look to the speed sensors electrical connector pins/sockets, for bent pins, spread sockets, corrosion, loose/broken wire strands, ect. One member has reported finding broken wire strands back where the speed sensors wires exit the split plastic wire loom atop the rear axle. His thought was that wind flexed the wire there & finally broke the strands under the insulation, he said the insulation didn't look just right at that exit point on the wire loom. If all looks ok on that end, follow the wire forward, paying close attention to where it passes by a pinch point area where the tranny was removed or installed, maybe it got bumped on removal or reinstallation.
On the shifting, was the TRS switch position messed with at all???? If so, maybe it's not aligned right, such that the gear selection doesn't jive with the in cabin shift indicator???
Will the tranny shift into Reverse, when it's indicating "R" on the in cabin shift indiactor???
Is the tranny fluid level right????
More thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.

They say it was working fine before breaking the rev band, but being a bench job, I never drove it prior to the rebuild to confirm. It was driven by a teenage girl, so who knows.
TRS is aligned, and I have even replaced it with a known good one to check.
Fluid level is correct.
Reverse does NOT work. I forgot to mention that in my first post.
I have removed, disassembled, and reinstalled the trans. Everything inside was correct.
Yes. Bands torqued to 72 in/lb and backed off 2 rounds. Pressures are spot on with ATSG book.
Only code I can pull is P0500. My scanner reads ABS codes as well, but it says its not supported on this vehicle.
Can you disconnect the linkage at the tranny & shift it by hand there & have it go into all the gears ok????
Can your scanner access the tranny computer, to sacn it & pull it's codes, to see if there is a solenoid, ect problem code stored????

Still doesn't explain the fact the speedo doesn't work.
So far everything I have traced looks fine.
I have a power probe kit that I am going to try back tracking from the ABS sensor to make sure there isn't a wire break anywhere. I just have to find the time to do it.
Quoted from the site:
Water intrusion into a connector (X309) located under the cab, beneath the driver's seat, can cause a rough idle, erratic speedometer operation, ABS Light and Check Engine Light illumination, and automatic transmission shifting problems. If needed, connector repair parts are available from Mazda dealers, and possibly some Ford dealers.
Pulled out my seat and floor matting and there it was, a shorted wire and corrosion.
After reconnecting I not only had my speedometer back, but my ABS light went out for the first time in 3 years.
