my 94 has the coldest air of any car or truck ive ever rode in. i love it. i guess all the original freon or whatever they charged with back then was outlawed cause it worked to well, and lasted for ever
i replaced my compressor myself when i first bought my truck. the pulley on the old compressor separated and was just rubbing on whatever was holding it together. i got the retrofitting kit and pumped it up with r134a and the a/c will freeze you out of the truck. never replaced a dryer or anything. i must be lucky
My 95 still blows cold which is nice since its a black truck. Drove home from Maine yesterday 2.5 hours in 90 deg heat with the fan on low. Its not as fast to cool down as the old GM A6 R 12 system in my 82 3500 but it doesn't use the gas like the Chevy did either.

I wish I had A/C, mine leaked out before I bought it. I really want A/C because I do alot of highway driving and I want to listen to the radio. Kind of hard to do both at 75mph with the windows rolled down.
I still have to get the conversion.
But the compressor still works! It cycles on and off so I'm glad I don't have to replace that.
I just got done with redoing the A/C in my mother's '94. I replaced the compressor/clutch, accumulator, orifice, all O-rings, low pressure clutch cycle switch, and the recirculation door actuator/lever plus vacuum pot. I removed the evaporator and cleaned it thoroughly inside and out. I flushed the lines, evaporator, and condenser relentlessly with A/C flush solvent.
Pulled vac for 2 hours then charged to factory spec with R134a. Works very well, with low side around 40 and high around 280 (automatically adjustable orifice). Set to "Normal" and "Lo" fan in 107F keeps the cab comfortable. Crank it up and prepare for your nipples to hurt.
1) If the system wasn't ruthlessly flushed, cleaned, and dried, FUBAR.
2) If the accumulator/dryer wasn't replaced, FUBAR
3) If the condenser is full of crap (small stones, bug guts, etc.) clean it out. Comb the fins if need be.
4) Reman compressors are hit-and-miss. Some I've had work well, others not so much. I'm a little wasteful now and so long as the price isn't just insane I'll spring for brand-new compressor/clutch. This one was from O'Reilly Auto and was $235, included the compressor and clutch assembly already shimmed and made with all-new components.
It sounds as if your compressor and/or clutch is failing. Doing the job right will take you about $400-500 (plus tools if you don't have them). Paying someone to do the job right will take a lot more.
