I grew up on what was termed folk rock in the 80s, stuff like James Taylor and Bob Dylan (though he always sounded like the record was bent). That stuff falls into the country category now, but it really isn't.
As far as telling a story making it country and instruments not mattering, go listen to Pink Floyd's "The Wall" or Queensreich's "Operation: Mindcrime", listen to their stories. Storytelling is a very common theme in any type of music, it's what music was to begin with, a way to remember a people's history and repeat it through generations. Those albums are firmly in the rock category, because of the instruments used. If they had been done on instruments associated with country music, then they would be considered country.
Any of these songs sound familiar? Several were redone as country though all had country roots.
I didn't the entire list word for word but anyone remember the Janice Joplin tune "piece of heart"? I believe it was remade by Faith Hill? Eagles - Desperado by Clint Black and a Queen song redone by Kidd Rock. Was it Fat Girls?
