humming noise

I've got some strange humming noise coming from the front end. I don't believe it's either wheel bearing cause they are both within 1 year old. So I've narrowed it down to something inside the front diff. At this time, I don't have the time to tear it apart and find out what the problem is, so I was going to just remove the front CV's so the diff guts don't turn, therefore getting rid of the noise and doing more damage to whatever the case may be.

What I want to know is, is it safe to pull the front CV's and drive? The front driveshaft is already gone because the transfer case doesn't work, so it's already been 2 wheel for a while. But now removing the front CV's, is there anything I have to be worried about?

I assume by CV, you mean your going to remove the 1/2 axle from the differential to the wheel bearing / hub ? How you going to get that out without removing the hub ?... If thats the plan, remember the axle sticks thru the bearing and there is a nut on the outside. There are two bearings back to back and the nut and axle pinch them together. If you take the axle out, you wil need to put something like a 3/4 inch bolt and nut thru the hole an torque it good to pinch the bearings together. If not, the bearing will fail.

Yes, I mean removing the axles from the hub/diff. I wasn't sure if something else needed to be done, like you said, putting something through the hub to pinch the bearing. I didn't know that it needed to be "pinched" to work properly. Will anything work, just as long as it's pinched? Or should I put something through it that is splined? Other then that, there is no harm removing the CV's right?

Before going to that work, I think I'd be shifting the neutral when coasting down the road. If the noise goes away with the transmission in neutral, the problem isn't the related to the front differential. Also, have you confirmed that the noise is vehicle speed dependent and NOT engine speed dependent? Does it change when going around turns?

I've put it in neutral while driving, and it still does it. The noise starts around 10 mph, and keeps going to at least 70mph...thats the fastest i've had it. The faster I go though, the faster the noise goes. Around 50 and up, the noise dies down, but I think it's just because it making it so frequently, that it's hard to hear it over road noise. It still makes the noise when making turns. Found that out by the on ramp to the freeway. I'm not to keen on taking turns at 35 in an explorer lol.

So I'm looking to try and fix the problem this weekend...like I said, I'm going to remove the CV joints/ half shafts. Has anyone done this before?

Incase I didn't mention, my truck is a 98 explorer 4WD.

What is the importance of using a bolt to pinch the wheel hub bearing?

Has anyone done this before?

I'd like a few pointers before I start something that can't be finished before work monday...

the bolt would be very important your not even supposed to put the tire on the gound unless the axle is torqued or bearing damage will happen.
