Stock Trans Temp Gauge

Stock Trans Temp Gauge
I have a 02 7.3 with 143,000 on it, last trans service unknown. Now the prob my wife and father-in-law was driving our 32' travel trailer home and the truck would'nt go above 50 and was at 3000 rpm. Got the truck home did a trans flush replaced the fliter all seems to be good just driving it around normal, the trans fluid did smell burnt, have'nt yet put the trailer on it yet. My issue seems to be that the stock trans temp gauge in the cab always reads 1/2 way even if it sits alnight ( i don't have a trans temp gauge on the piller just the stock one yea i know I'll get one). Has anyone ran into this? How bad was the trans hurt? FYI when i dropped the pan there was normal fuz on the mag nothing that worried me. Thanks for the help.

I dont know about the condition of the trans but it doesn't sound good to be red lined and only doing 50mph, but the stock (idiot) light on the dash is not very accurate, I believe it is only essentially a switch at certain setpoints to display, lets say a big range of 100 to 200 and its in the "normal" range, that's why most have gauges.

Yea i'm not sure what was up with the 50mph, from what they said it was like the trans would'nt shift, but i'm alittle concerned about the use of the OD on/off button on the gear select lever. When i tow i run with OD off, my father-in-law was turning off and on. On when driving on flat ground Off when coming up to a hill? What do you think?

It sounds to me like your Over Drive gears may be burned up and it is time for an overhaul.
gauges will 'help', but a 6.0 tranny cooler will help even more.

Your transmission gauge on the dash is nothing more than a indicator to tell you that you have issues. The normal range is up to 248 degrees, which is much hotter than most folks who know better. Most will start letting off as soon as we see 220 or so. Honestly, I pay more attention to the gauges when I see 200 than the road.
A bigger cooler will keep the temps down where they should be. Most run the 6.0 cooler and just pitch the OEM one. Stacking them is ok, but you just can't beat the 6.0 as it is a mostly drop in deal.
You can pick up a trans temp gauge for under $60 and they install easily. Best money you can spend IMO to save the trans.
