I have a 2004 F-250 with the 5.4 in it and its a 6 speed. I put a custom exhaust on it (2 3/4 pipe from heads to x-pipe to super 40s (dual exhaust on each side)). Ever since i done that my gas mileage has sucked! I have put new EGR valves on it and they help a little cause when i push the clutch in when i am slowing down it idles high about 2500 rpm. my local mechanic was talkinn about exhaust regulators for it? is there any way i can put some kind of back pressure on it?

1. The cats create more back pressure than the mufflers. The Ford ECM will adjust (properly) up to a 10% fuel mixture to ensure proper A/F ratio. You could actually remove the mufflers completely & it would make no difference in terms of the trucks loss of performance due to back pressure loss (its very minimal)- think of it this way, the mfg reported hp/tq gain is at peak rpm, typically not the engines powerband.
2. I would disconnect the battery for 30 minutes, allowing the ecm to re-calibrate and loose any previous settings.
3. Check your driving style, sometimes we drive a little harder if it sounds good.
4. Likely an O2 sensor was either damaged by heat during the install or "died"- that can ruin MPG & drivability very quickly.
