All I know about this is that my 06 does not have the insulation on the downpipe(I do have tin foil or something on the firewall. It is a full size heat shield that basically goes from the driver to pass valve covers and basically top to bottom.
My stock downpipe was not insulated.... and the MBRP dowmpipe that I installed about 50K miles ago isn't insulated. There has been no indication of heat transfer through the pipe...
you must have an 03 or an 04? I had the same thing on mine, asked and was told wasn't needed. Ive had mine off for a while now and no probs yet! your gonna loooove the way the turbos gonna scream now. Theres a resonator pipe in some of the 03 down pipes and if thats what you have your gonna notise a big diff in the sound!
your signature says you have CAT back duels. You didn't do your down pipe?

Just got my turbo back 'off road' MBRP 409 SS 4" system installed yesterday. Sounds very cool now. The guy that did the install told me that the Canadian built 03's and 04's had the heatshield and they're a PITA to take out. Mine did not have a heat shield/insulation.
$699 installed. Not too bad.
I got the MBRP XP Cool Duals no cat Turbo back for $718 on E-Bay with tips ( I wish they were a different tip design theough)Thanks for the feedback, my wife will be more pleased than I that the MBRP pipe does not need wrapping. The stock system seemd to be a bit of overkill, besides there are sooo many guys who have the MBRP system on this site would have mentioned to wrap the down pipe. She was scared of a fire going down the road.
I drove my truck aropund town the other day to get the supplies to change my oil, I drove 20+ miles. When I got home I went under the truck to pull the drain plug and touched the exhaust pipe at the base of the DP and it was warm - that's it just WARM. I thought man, these deisels run cool. A gaser would snap crackling and poping in the exhaust sending signals to me "do not touch me".
I believe the insulation was not for heat, but to help reduce the noise from the 03 and early 04 turbos. (The ones with the loud whistle) So there is no need to put any back on.

Uh-oh... That insulation stuff on my down pipe looks like it's getting really loose! It may fall off this weekend! OH NO!
hey oz, after you get the foil off, check to see if you have a boxy looking part on your dp, right after that is a small resonator thats part of the dp. just wanted to see if you have it, I know there was a discussion on here a while ago that some have it and some don't. Mine did and when I picked up a new dp from matt I notised a difference in power and noise(for the better)!
If you have it get an aftermarket! youll have a completly differnt truck!
