So I got this 1981 F-150 Stepside, unfortunately some kid rear-ended me the other day and bent my rear bumper all out of whack. Insurance adjuster says I need to find a replacement to determine the value, but I can't find anything like it anywhere. All the ones online have some weird styles that just don't look as classic. I think it might have been a custom job done before I got it.
Anyone have any ideas as to where I might find one similar? If you can't tell from the photo, it's chromed, and it's a very heavy gauge steel.
I'm no flareside expert, but if it's heavy gauge, I doubt it's factory. Contact a fabricator and see what it'll cost to get one made and chromed and present them with the estimate.
Stepside is a registered trademark of General Motors Corp., one will have better luck using the Ford nomenclature (Flareside, as stated by Chump) when looking for parts specific to this model.
This is because the Ford parts books don't list models with names such as Flareside, they list numeric values in parenthesis instead. In your case, your Body Type is 83.
Personally, I think the Stepside name fits just fine and is a great name and I even use it myself as I refuse to dedicate the brain cells in remembering which is a Flareside and which is a Styleside.
But that's not a good idea when looking for specific parts for this thing.
That being said, I tried to look up the part number & availability of a chrome rear bumper for your truck.
The book says:
E0TZ-17906-E CHROME BUMPER (REAR) Fits 1980 F100 Body Type 83Obsolete, no dealers or obsolete parts vendors have any.*
Alternatively, it lists:
E2TZ-17906-C BLACK HI-GLOSS BUMPER (REAR) Fits 1982 F100 Body Type 83Obsolete, no dealers or obsolete parts vendors have any.*
* It could also be the part numbers were later superseded (replaced) but I don't have that book so I can't tell for certain.
My personal suspicion is misprints in the book, I can't imagine there being any substantial differences in rear bumpers 1980-1986 F100/350 Flareside body (Stepside).
(Did F250s & F350s even COME with that kind of box? Maybe not.)
Add to that, the book doesn't list ANY others for ANY other years of this style truck, those two are IT for the rear stepside bumpers.
You might talk to a local bumper shop and ask about getting it straightened & re-chromed.

You have the standard factory bumper on your Flareside, which maybe be hard to find since the Flaresides were not as popular as the standard Fords. My Flareside has a regular chrome step bumper, guess the PO changed it out. The step bumper looks ok, but I like the look of the factory unit better. I plan to change out if I ever locate one. Good luck on your search
Im always a bit worried about getting hit like that. All those flareside parts can be hard to come by. Guess I should consider myself lucky it takes that little bit extra to slow down and cant ever short-stop someone.
