That's another thing I wondered is when modifying the performance of the truck with these chips, does it have an effect on the motor or trans long or short term?

any time you add HP you are gonna put a larger strain on driveline parts

What mostly effects the motor and tranny is the 'nut' behind the wheel and if he uses his 'lead' foot or his 'egg' foot. To 'have more power and get better MPHs' sounds like a condictatory measure of terms. The 'power' is 'there' and helps with MPG in shifting and engine 'tuning'.... with the usage of a 'lighter' foot.... on the other hand if (at a given moment) you wish to burn some rubber off of your tires and blow (unburnt fuel) black smoke for x number of yard () you have the power to do so..... Does that help your MPG???? NOOOOO. but you are not burning rubber all day long.

I burned up my tranny by 'raising' the govenor and pulling a camper at speeds of 75-80 for hundreds of miles at a time (I did not have a 6.0 cooler at that time)..... (I don't drive like that any more... but I can if I wanted to)

that's my main goal is to do what I can to raise the MPG, which usually is tuning and raising the HP, it's not like it's awful fuel economy but since they can do better than stock, why not. I will be towing a 25' enclosed trailer 1,000 miles each way so the cooler is something that needs to be addressed from stock before this trip? Personally the EX will be driven some here an there but is mainly for towing.

By the way I have a 2001 Excursion 7.3 stock except the suspension and vinyl I guess, was a police package. I don't believe anything was changed as far as the drivetrain goes.

I am able to get in the low to mid 20s not pulling. I have a 30 camper and pulling that the range is 15-16 mpg......

I used to have a Chebby 20 decked out conversion van.... mpg pulling my camper..... 6mpg

compared to that I am very happy with the 7.3
