I had to replace my starter in april of 08 and in turn bought a DB starter. It just crapped out so now im in the market for a new one and after searching around found my old thread asking the same question.
Now I seem to be finding that people are having lots of problems with the DB starters. So what is the best starter to buy? I plan on keeping the truck another 100,000 to 150,000 miles as it only has 108,000 on it now. I don't really care what it costs as long as it holds up better than this one did.
I had to buy an OEM starter while on the road - and paid dearly for it at a Stealership, but it cranks with authority and sounds great (unlike the one that died). I see many people trying to find 'better' starters out there, but at PartsGuyEd's price, why would anyone stray much beyond OEM? Is there some evil dark side to OEM starters?
If I am correct "Ed" works at a dealer ship, is a site sponsor and a 7.3 owner himself who sells parts at a reasonable price compared to what "most" dealers(read stealers) sell them for, www.partsguyed.com another option would be to have yours rebuilt by a good rebuilder.
I had one go out and I took it to a well known starter shop and had them rebuild it.Most starter shops will use better quality parts on their rebuilds.
Good luck.
After I got home, I checked Ed's starter price, and it was about 175 less than I paid - I got the full Ford dealer hose job in Illinois. I also agree that local rebuilders tend to user better parts and for the most part, do a good job.
Your DB unit has a 2yr warranty... I sent mine back (it only lasted a few starts and the new one came back with a note that says "If this starter fails we will issue a refund". Not putting it in the truck, but I may see if a rebuilder can do anything with it. I wish I woulda investigated the cause of failure on the first one.
There's been alot of good talk about the Mitsubishi starters. I put a 'real' Nippondenso starter in my F350 quite some time ago and haven't had an issue yet - but it was 3x as much as DB's POS china knock-off! I will say the OE in my Excursion was still working fine at 240k miles when I took it out as 'PM'.
Think i might go this route. I have all the time in the world. We have an excellent auto elec. shop near by and ill just let him know its a chinese knock off and maybe he will put quality guts in it.
