Can anyone tell me what the nipple in the middle of this pic goes to? It was capped off and I figure its probably on the truck for a reason. Thanks in advance.
This was a 2, 3 or 4 ported vacuum delay valve. Someone broke the top half off that contains the ports, then capped off the remains.
Which ported valve it is, I dunno...because you failed to list the engine size, CA vehicle or not.
Could be an 8A564 coolant temp valve, 9D473 EGR vacuum control valve, or a 12A091 dizzy vacuum control valve. But, these are only the Ford basic part numbers.
There are myriad different types of each, as it all depends on the application.
Sold new is CA vehicle: The DSO code on the Warranty Plate will be either 71 or 72.
1979 F150, 351m
has a catalytic converter
DSO code is 17-Washington
I dont think its a VCV, unless this engine should have 3 of them. The EGR VCV is just out of frame and working. Theres another 4 port thats in front of the distributor, also working.
I just got the EGR hooked up and retimed the engine which has gotten it running better than ever. Performance is good, just curious what this thing is.
Speaking of vacuum parts, the vacuum resistor which limits the amount of vacuum that reaches the distributor is missing. Autozone lists a "spark delay valve". Is that the same as the v rest listed on my vacuum diagram?
how many non CA vehicles have y'all non CA residents seen this part installed on?
I have a 400 in a '73 Galaxie that came from the Twin Cities plant with the exact same fitting, in what seems to be the exact same spot. I will try to snap a picture of it.
Here's mine. I have it capped off, but under the cap is a barbed nipple. Both the 351M and 400 are dry-intake motors, so no coolant temperature switches in the intake on these.

Looks the same as the one posted in the first picture.
Correct, the ported vacuum switch went in the thermostat water outlet.
