Any idea what this is, the service engine soon light came on when this noise started. I don't have a code reader. The engine makes kind of a waa waa waa noise if that makes any sence. I just walked around to the cab a little to see if the noise was more distinctive.
Definately get the codes...but I had the same prob when I changed out my VC gaskets. I missed an injector plug. Wasn't connected all the way like I thought it was and it sounds almost like cam lope from a gas engine at idle. Rev a little and you can definately hear and feel a miss. With that said I would start at the UVCH.
Well I had a friend with a very nice snap on scanner in a black suitcase with a lot of attachements. And we could not get anything from the computer, like the power was off. He thought it may be the computer going bad, I guess he has replaced a couple on these trucks.
My truck is a 99 model with a 97 build date. And it has more power that the other trucks I test drove so I think it may have an earlly reflash or mod that may of caused the codes to not read is that a real possibility?
I am going to have the recall done on the cps to eliminate another variable. I have allready replaced it once though.

The diagnostic connector will not have power (and subsequently will not power the scanner or communicate with any modules on the truck) if the cigarette lighter fuse is open.
As for the computer going bad...
Not likely. The PCMs in these trucks are ridiculously robust and rarely fail just by usage.

Not likely a possibility as a '99 MY truck will be REQUIRED to meet OBD2 specification and all '97 MY trucks were built with that in mind.

See replies in red. Although the video's audio was not really clear, I didn't really hear anything strange.
cleatus, thats it cigarette lighter fuse blown due to kids stuffing pennies in there, and I never fixed it since I don't use it.
Its running normal today but was running rough yesterday. I put my $30 special reader in there and it came up with no codes but it lit up and and read like it normally would. the service engine light is out, do I need to wait for it to act up again and throw the light to get the codes?
Thank you very much for the offer MXfyrcaptain I will let you know if I need to take you up on it

That's the reason the scanner could not communicate with the PCM. The plug is on the same fuse as the cigarette lighter. Replace that fuse and then get your buddy's fancy toy back over.
ok finally got codes: in stored codes 0605 1272 1216 476
after reset we have 1670 0380 and 1316. So I think the last three are the ones to focus on. I know/don't care about the glow plugs. The guy that pulled the codes seems to think I should start with replacing the Injector driver module in the drivers front wheelwell is that correct?

I'm not sure on the codes, someone with more brain power will chime in I'm sure. However, just food for thought, you should come on down to Morgan Hill on aug 13th for our Nor Cal Tech Day get together. I believe that there will be a spare IDM there that you could swap out and see if things clear up. Also there will be some very brilliant minds there to help diagnose your problems.
Oh yeah, and there is always good BBQ and adult beverages

The "guy" certainly isn't familiar with the 7.3.
Do not replace the IDM without checking the Under Valve Cover Harness connectors. A loose UVCH connector or burnt center pin will cause the P1316 code.
This has been discussen ad infinitum so I'm not going into details.
