Hey all. New to the site. I am currently shopping for my 1st ex. I am limited in what I can spend. I would really like a Diesel ex but all that I am finding are outside my price range. I have found a nice one with the v10 in it. What are your thoughts on it. I know from researching them that I am looking at 9-12 mpg. That sucks but I need a SUV and I HATE GM. so, any insite would be helpful. Thanks in advance
i've owned 3 V10 excursions since march 2009. loved every single one of them! the V10 is dead on reliable. may cost you some on gas but it will keep going and going and going!
i would look for the cleanest low mile V10 you can find. you will be very happy i'm sure.
i'm content with my 8-12mpg considering how useful the truck is.
Have you had any type of recurring issues with the v10? I read somewhere about a problem with spark plugs getting stuck in the heads. Any thing you have experienced? I had an 02 f-250 with the 5.4 v8. I got 12 mpg at its best so i am not terribly worried about it. What rearend comes in the Ex?
no issues with plugs what so ever, now my 5.4 expedition has blown a plug but it is an easy fix.
all i've done with my V10s is change the oil and put gas in them. they dont ask much of anything from you. i'm not easy on them either, i drive it like a race car more then a 8000lbs truck.
so long as the plugs have been replaced correctly there should be no issues. also note that in 2003 they added threads to the heads so '03-up should have no plug issues.
I do t know about excursions, but the v10 in my f250 has 220xxx on it and it's the last thing on my trick im worried about breaking. It runs and drives out like any, low mileage truck I've ever had. Hope that helps with some concerns.
I love the V10 - bad on gas but it's a small price to pay to have the peace of mind reliability the engine has. I looked at diesels as well and they were all 3-6k more than a V10 and usually had more miles. I did the math on the mileage savings, diesel typically costs more and how many miles per year I drive (~10k) and it was going to take over 6 years to just break even on the initial purchase price. I tow a 30ft Sea Ray with twin engines and it's usually loaded to about 10,500lbs on the trailer with no issues. I haven't met a gear head yet who didn't want more power but this thing does a great job. It took me almost 6 months to find mine - an 03 with only 56k miles and configred exactly like I wanted. Good luck in your search!
I don't know where you are Jason but a 05 Ex Limited 4wd is for sale off hwy 64 West in Wake County, NC. Yesterday was the first day I saw it sitting there and I drive that road everyday. I don't know if it is a gas or diesel.
Looks like he's in Michigan.
Jason, if you don't want a rustbucket Excursion from up your way, there are several for sale in the South-including mine, or the one that Excurvelle is talking about.
