a/c swap to non-a/c truck

Whats up fellas!

So, i have a 1988 f150 mud truck that has a factory a/c and its completely pointless to have on a mud truck. I would like to swap it onto my 1994 f150 that doesnt have a factory a/c.

I know its possible, but is it a hassle? I'm not worried about "it'll get worse gas mileage" and all that crap.

Just as a reference
The 88 is a lariat w/ PL, PW, A/C, 5 speed, 4x4, 302
The 94 is an XL....Crank windows, manual locks, no factory a/c, 5 speed 300/6

I know everything about the a/c systems. I am a certified HVAC technician in automotive, residential, and commercial systems. So don't be afraid to use technical terminology

Thanks in advance guys!

you shouldnt be getting worse gas mileage, infact generrally with windows down is when you get worse mileage, as far as a hassle, you may need to cut through the fire wall, also plan the vents and cutting the holes for the vents, plus the compresser and what not you need to run the lines and all, so its really up to you and all that.

I dont also. Not like they had different cabs for ac and non ... It should be bolt up for the most part. I dont know if the older ducting/housing will bolt up to the newer truck but should not be far off.

Has your 88 had the R134 conversion? If not then it's pointless because it'll be fun getting the r12 refilled. The shop I go to would fill mine, but not unless I throw 150 bucks their way. SCREW THAT.

Correct me if Im wrong but I thought the conversion is just removing the R12 and putting in new 134 and oil. I know thats all I did to my old IROC and she blows as cold as a 2012... I could be wrong but lol its held up for this many years in that old girl.

Thats where having am hvac certification comes in handy, i can access r12 anywhere that has it. I can go up to my class where i received my certification and get it for free. Hell, my teacher would even let me use the machine to evacuate the system, run a vacuum, and fill her up with r12 and oil. No problems there

Subscribing because I was just about post a question on this. I have a 1988 F150 with no A/C that I desperately want to add A/C to.

I have a parts truck (1987 cab with A/C) as a donor. Hoping that I will be able to cobble together most everything I need from the donor truck.

As far as the cab goes - is it as simple as replacing the non-A/C blower box with the A/C blower box, and replacing the non-A/C dash controls with an A/C panel?

I should be able to figure everything else out as far as compressor, condenser, lines, etc.

Wow you're lucky. My teacher that I had for my heating class who owns his own HVAC company had no idea what I was talking about when I asked him about helping me with capturing the r12. The class was titled "Basics to gas and oil heating". we never touched on oil heating.....

Glad im not alone!

Honestly, that was my thoughts. replace blower box with a/c blower box, mount compressor, run lines, mount condensor, run a vacuum, retrofit for 134-a, charge with refrigerant and oil, have an a/c! I dont think youd have to change controls? Most likely will though, its a cinch to find one at a jy.

but it seems too simple!

Exactly - seems too easy.

As far as the dash - my HVAC controls don't have a position for A/C on/off. It's just vent or heat. So I figure replacing the control panel gets me with functional A/C switches - now whether I have to do anything else is up in the air. I'm hoping, like everything else in these trucks, that all the wiring is back there somewhere, just not in use.

Let me know how it goes. If I'm lucky, I'll be starting the swap next weekend.

Thats the good thing about these trucks. Every thing is there, just some not in use so its easy to put options on a bone stock, non-options truck.

Im waiting for someone with a definate explanation

and YES! i used the search option for about an hour!
