I was thinking about making a mount for an extra reverse light for my '07. Now that I put a cap on it I miss the light that is on the back of the cab. I know I can buy a kit but I thought I could make something cheaper or better looking.
Anyone done this?
i did the same thing, i used a cheap set of 2x6 driving lights from the local parts store, $25, and mounted them to the rear bumper. power was stolen from the existing rev lights, and they worked fine. also they extra light helped out quite a bit since i tinted the windows. they did pop a fuse so i bumped it from a 10 to a 15 fuse and no problems for over a year.
the other way to go is to run a hot wire right from the fuse block, through a toggle switch, and then to the rear. that way you can run them when you need them. not just in reverse but also as a work light
Oxxon, do you mind sharing details or maybe showing some pics?
Sorry, I dont have that truck anymore. Also when I said I could raise and lower it I meant by hand. When I didn't need the extra light I just flipped it back up and out of the way.
I purchased a set of led light pods and tapped them into my trailer hitch wiring. lights up the neighborhood when I'm backing up. well worth it and I think total it was like $30. just an idea.
I have yet to install it on my '05, but the plan is to copy the set up we used for an old truck of mine.
1.) Pick your poison for a light set up (I have had great luck with $25 "boat LED lights" from Amazon.)
2.) Run a hot off your fuse block, and use a relay and a 3 position switch.
3.) Wire so you can have the lights on when in reverse OR any other gear position by using the switch.
At first, I thought "man this is a lot of extra wiring for a switch I won't use". Wow, was I wrong! Knowing the option is there, I have used them for a lot of small things I would have fumbled through in the dark before. Of course, I have tapped off the hot for the OE backup lights and had success with that as well. Just thought I'd share another option that has served me well
