I recently took my 1992 Ford F-350 7.3idi auto on a 850mile road trip last week. I noticed when driving 70-75 in overdrive down the highway I noticed the rpms were jumping up from 2300rpm to 2500rpm (pulsing every min or so for a second) when I backed the speed down below 70 the problem when away. What could be wrong I checked the trans fluid and everything was ok.
I don't think the overdrive light works any more because there is never light from it. What do you mean the gauges have to be rock steady? If you mean the throttle being steady I was using the cruise control. The transmission has 120k on it rebuilt 40k ago.
Yep they are reading steady while driving I can defiantly hear the trucks revs jump while driving, when I get back in town (currently on road trip with it) on tues I will try to scan for codes. I was thinking possibly the torque converter would be causing that?
Yes, thats most likely what you are seeing. Usually its a sensor error that causes the problem (such as speed sensor, or tach sensor). In some cases, bad grounds in the tail lights can also confuse the transmission since its supposed to unlock the converter instantly as soon as you touch the brake pedal. If the problem persists, it may go into limp mode (hard shifting). I'd get a code scan done ASAP.
Ford Fuel Injection » How To Run a Self-Test Here is a link on how you can get any trouble codes yourself. Or you could buy an Equus 3145 code reader for around $30.00 to make life easier.
During the test you will need to keep the gas pedal to the floor (engine off) otherwise you may get a false TPS code.
I bought the scanner. I started the truck this morning to find the tach was completely dead. After I took off it came back but at an idle the tack is jittery.
you'll want to change the tach sensor/and or repair the wires before you continue to drive the truck.otherwise it could needlessly cost you thousands for a rebuilt trans/hundreds for a used one,AND you'd still need a working tach after trans replacement anyway.
