I recently picked up my first powerstroke, a 97' f250 Xl, 5-speed 4x4. Ext cab lwb.
The truck has just under 316k on the original drive train, and still runs like a champ. I built a cold air intake using a spectre filter and PVC. Came out cheaper and beter then the stock filter or a 6697. I also removed the muffler, due to it rattleing and havibg a hole in it. Just that alone really woke it up!
The guy i bought the truck from told me it needed a bushing, cause it was hard to get in reverse, i thought he was full of it and thought the tranny was trash, but for the price i still made the deal.
I put about 1k miles on it back and forth to work for the 2 weeks ive had it, fighting it into gear. Then, today it would not go into gear and started squeeling when i pressed the clutch, like a throw out bearing. So i limp it hope, research a bit and find a few posts here regarding the clutch rod bushing. The stupidest thing ever! So i went out side and looked, my rod is broke right before the eye! IT WAS HELD TOGETHER WITH TAPE!
Now for the questions, could this cause the squeel? Will the ebay heim joint fix this, or do i need a new rod or worse a new mc? Do you think the throwout bearing is bad also?
When these trucks hit 400k miles, they tick back to 300k on the odometer. With that in mind, it may be possible that your truck has 416k, 516k, or more miles on the clock.
I wish I could help you with your transmission problems.
Welcome to FTE. Since we know what part is bad for sure, go ahead and order the heim joint and fix what you know is broken. Then you can determine if the tape was restricting pedal travel and causing the squeal or if you've got other issues.
Did they at least use a good duct tape, or just some cheap electrical tape?
It would make life easier if you removed the MC. For clarification, we're talking about the clutch hydraulics MC, not anything that has to do with the brakes. You'll also have an easier time if you remove the clutch pedal so you can drill it out properly.
With the right tools, some flexibility, and holding your mouth just right, I guess it could all be done without removing anything. Usually it's just easier to pull a few parts.
