Need Advice QUICK!

It all started yesterday when I was coming back from lunch. I was sitting at a stoplight and all of a sudden my motor started to go into a high idle, so I'm thinking wtf is going on, and then I see my temp gauge needle start going.....and going....and going, it went about 3/4 of the way over to hot but I was seconds away from home so I got her home and let her sit for a couple hours.

My first thought was to check my radiator fluid. Opened up the cap, peered inside, couldn't see anything, seriously, I even grabbed a flashlight and looked down into it as far as I could, still didn't see anything. So I grabbed the hose, and filled it with water. I stood there with the hose for about a good 15 seconds before I could actually see liquid, that let me know the radiator was damn close to empty. I checked underneath for leaks everywhere, didn't see anything. Took it to my mechanic this morning, immediately saw a leak in one of the freeze plugs on the block.

So he said I have two options, I could either change out the freeze plug, which he said he hasn't done in years and doesn't want to do, or I could drain the radiator and run block sealer through the radiator and block so that it pinpoints the leak and seals it up. Now, I'm a guy who's all for fixing/replacing something if it's broke, not temp fixing it. So my question is that if anybody here has ever had this problem, what did you do, or what is your opinion to best handle this? He told me not a lot of people know how to properly change out a freeze plug, but the only other place he would trust would be a Ford dealership, but I called and they want $650 to do it, which I don't have. Any and all feedback is welcome! Sorry for the book.

Shop around, but fix it right.

If you have to pay $650, then it beats having that leak sealer failing on you at a bad time. A small drip will buy you some time if cash is tight.

Keep it topped off until you can afford to fix it.
