Just got done changing my fuel filters for the first time. Good news is I didn't get the dreaded 'diesel bath' or the infamous drain plug that never stops flowing (still don't understand that one). The bad news is my fuel pressure didn't change one bit so I'll be doing the spring upgrade and I sheared 3 of the points off the secondary fuel filter cap. The torque spec for it is 14 nm, a.k.a. 10 ft/lbs for those who live on planet earth, but my wrench only goes down to 20. Stupidly I thought that would be ok and stripped it before the wrench clicked. My question is will it be ok to wait until my next change to replace the cap or am I doing damage by leaving it like this (i.e. squishing the o-ring or pushing the filter too far down into the bowl)?
The thing I would worry about is sucking air through the cap. I personally never use a torque wrench on the cap just make sure it seats all the way down and snug it pretty good.
Cut the kid a break. He said this is the first time he's done it and we all started somewhere. I started on dirt bikes at 14 and broke more than a few things learning over 30 years.
Ian, as long as it's not leaking it's fine. The seal is the o-ring pressed between the cap and the aluminum housing.
For the future, all you need to do is tighten the cap down far enough that the lip of the cap meets the edge of the housing and make sure it's snug. This is true for both fuel filter and the oil cap.
What would cause it to suck air? The cap is on tightly it felt like it was just about to 20 ft lbs when it stripped its probably at 18 or so
but doesnt that one have a 1/2 inch drive for a breaker bar in center of the hex thats how I get mine off
its fine for now just have a new one next time you change the filter out if it dont have the 1/2 drive
I dont tourque that one either just seat it and tight
If you get into the moter get a tourque wrench that goes from 0-20 lbs
I guess its not IF but WHEN you get into the moter
lots of aluminum/plastic parts any more that strip easyier than that one did under less touque than that
Mine goes from 0-100 lbs but the first 12lbs is hard to feel the click Im thinking about a digital one TQ Wrench
anyone thats really ever wrenched alittle has done something like this dont feel bad just join the club

Just for the sake of discussion, how much fuel is in the tank when you pull the drain plug? I try to time mine so that there's about 1/4 to 3/8 tank. I get pint of fuel into the drain pan and that's it. I wouldn't think the 4WD would make it any different.

You'll be ok, I'm not saying you can't crush the filter...but the plastic cap won't be the device you do it with. Now if you were running an aftermarket brand you could possibly twist it when you snugged the cap down...I've seen photos of that on here.
I saw a thread a few weeks back where someone mentioned the fuel filters were indexed to the housing. I was planning to look at mine real close next time I change em. I didn't notice any notches or anything to line up before. You guys aware of anything like that on either filter?
