Do not use any powder actuated fastener to hold up shelving. These fasteners are a friction fit and also cause impact problems within the block itself. Especially when shot into hollow masonry walls they will simply blow the block apart. the friction fit will loosen over time until it pulls out-usually when your head is underneath it.
Exactly. I shattered quite a few blocks in a wall at my old job before I learned my lesson.. They are, however, quite fun for other uses, but....
The newer epoxy is great stuff. I've used it to glue anchor rods into concrete, solid granite, hard sandstone, ect. The steel in these rods can be rated at 150 kips and I've done some that have 2" Dia. and are 40 feet long-you do the math. The epoxy is spec'ed so that the steel will fail first. It will hold.

Shelving On Cement Block Walls
Ahhh Red Heads are the way to go...have used many of them in my Shop and my garage, both have Concrete Block in the walls. hehehe...I asked the guy at the home improvement store what to use...I just love them!
Nothing's pulled out of the wall yet!!
Oh yeah, don't expect epoxy to hold well to painted block
Connie, you drill a hole and then put the epoxy in the hole then insert the rod/bolt, whatever. Hopefully you don't paint the inside of the hole first.
I saw a product at Lowe's once for hanging shelves in basements that didn't rely on drilling the block. The slotted rails had a hook on top that would hang on the top of the wall. I think you could put an anchor in at the bottom to keep them from shifting, but it wasn't critical. Then you attached the shelf brackets and shelves. I think you could do the whole thing without tools, unless you wanted to fasten the shelves to the brackets.
