In my '87 E150 302 van, the hard plastic vacuum line to the heater control valve broke off. I looked at the remaining portion and it's brittle further back.
How can I fix this? Do I need to pull the dash to replace a vac line??
I was looking to see which position is which in the valve so I could jam it closed for now... the stupid plastic thing broke apart when I tried to pull it off the hose. In fact the plastic was crumbling in a pretty alarming way, at least it didn't do this on the road.
I can't form a mental picture of your situation but typically those harder plastic vacuum control lines can be spliced and/or repaired by finding a suitable rubber hose and slippnig it over the damaged sections. Naturally it has to fit snugly enough to hold the vacuum.
I don't think there is a suitable splicing technique or material though----that type of plastic doesn't compatible to most adhesives etc.
It's probably brittle only in the engine compartment. Whatcha got to lose to try what JWA suggested? I don't think you have any choice but to, frankly.
Danny it doesn't matter how far the embrittled section goes---the vacuum splicing I suggested would work the full length if needed. Typically those lines are pretty tough and fail more from being exposed to the higher heat under the hood. Your heater control valve couldn't be in a worse situation since its constantly under a high temp situation.
Henry has it right though-----nothing to lose except the fun of NOT tearing the dash apart!!
