Kickdown Cable Install....

In my further tinkering with my '66, I found that there was no kickdown installed on the Transmission... I realize that this isn't absolutely necessary, I can always manually downshift, but i figure it's an automatic, it might as well work like it's supposed to!

So, I went looking for a solution- It appeared that the easiest one was one of Lokar's kick down cables... It seemed like a relatively painless installation. I read up a bit on them on the web, and decided that it was something that I could tackle without too much difficulty. I was a bit nervous, because there were a lot of people that complained about the instructions not being adequate... But it seemed pretty straight forward to me!

Really, It couldn't have been easier. The cable was designed to bolt right on to a C-6 transmission. One bolt through an existing hole on the transmission case is all it took. The kit also solved another problem that I had, there was no longer a lever on the kickdown-

The kit includes a stainless lever. When it's installed on the transmission, it looks like this-

Not the best angle, but there isn't much room down there to work- Let alone take photos!!

I was missing the nut, too- That took 2 trips to the hardware store... Turns out it's a fine thread metric, M-8... I didn't have one on hand!

Things up on the carb went on pretty well, too. I've got a temporary bracket on there until I replace the throttle cable. When I do that, I'll use one of Lokar's shiny stainless brackets.

You pretty much bolt it on, adjust the fitting so it's pulling the kickdown all the way at wide open throttle, then you're set.

Even for someone who's totally green, like me, it is an EASY job... It took me a few hours, but most of that was figuring out and fabricating a mounting bracket... If I'd have just BOUGHT the Lokar bracket in the first place, I would have saved some trouble... Next time.

I took it out for a road test, and it works quite well! I've got some steep hills nearby, and she shifted well going up them. I took it for a brief spin on the highway, and when you punch it, it downshifts as it should, and she SCOOTS. I'm really happy with it- well worth the 60 something dollars. My 'To do' list keeps getting shorter and shorter! I MIGHT even be done someday

They make them for C-4's, too- I'd imagine it's probably just as easy to install...
