trans fluid change tips

After reading several posts about trans fluid changes, I thought I
would add a good tip for you all. I have a f350 4x4 crew cab with
a 460 with the e40d trans. I had the trans rebuilt and upgraded
a few months ago and my trans guy gave me this tip on draining
the oil. First, pull the rubber plug under the torque converter and turn the engine over by hand to locate the torque converter drain plug. Get your drain pan under there and remove the plug. If you have a 4x4 make sure you have a big pan or bucket, lots of fluid is on its way! After the fluid stops draining, put the plug back in a snug it up, not real tight. Then, start the truck and run it for no more than 10 seconds. Then, go back under, line up the torque converter drain plug again and remove the plug. More trans fluid will drain out. Now, when you remove the pan, it will only have about a 1/2 a quart, and you wont be "wearing" all your tranny fluid. Much easier and cleaner method than pulling the pan first. What happens here is the pump drains the pan into the torque converter, leaving very little fluid in the pan. When refilling, ad about 5 of 6 quarts, start the truck for a few seconds, turn off and add more fluid (depending on your capacity), then idle truck and top off. My truck holds 16 quarts of fluid, so it can be a bit messy to pull the pan first.

Good luck,

JoeG
