Okay for about 2 weeks now my A/C has been having a mind of it's own. It started out not blowing cold in the mornings, but seemed fine in afternoon. Now it just won't cool down. Just made a trip to Florida and tried adding coolant via a AUtozone kit with built in guage. Got cool for a few miles, but went hot again. Using the included light I couldn't see a leak. Clutch seems to be kicking in fine runs 3 seconds on and 6 off. But no cooling. Any help would be appreciated. I am a fair shade tree man, but not much experience with A/C.
The first thing you need to do is throw away that can of ...umm, stuff...from Auto Zone. The gauge really doesn't tell you anything useful and they are notoriously inaccurate. The can contains additives, boosters, sealers, or other snake oil that really don't belong in your AC system.
Assuming your ambient temps are in the 90s (summer in GA) your compressor shouldn't be cycling much at all. Short cycling "could" indicate low refrigerant charge, but you would need both system pressures to confirm that.
Go to Auto Zone and rent or buy a Manifold Gauge set. Check the pressures with the AC on Max, High Blower, engine at 1300rpm with the doors open. You want to see about 2.5 times ambient temp for the High Side pressure and about 30 psi on the Low Side.
