The igniton in my explorer has got to the point that you can turn on the accessories without having the key in it and it can just move around a whole bunch. It's a 93 explorer, I'm not sure what has to be replaced, just the lock cylinder, I'm not sure? Has anyone done this before? Should I just take it to the dealership, and if so how much do you think run? Thanks!
It is an easy DIY job and not too expensive either. Get a replacement lock cylinder at Autozone or such for around $20. Take it to a locksmith and have it rekeyed to match your original keys for around $25. R&R requires you to remove the plastic lower/upper steering columh housings and steering wheel. Once that is done, take a thin, long blade screwdriver and insert under right side of tilt mechanism going up at about a 45 degree angle and depress the cylinder lock pin (key in and truned to accessory position)- then pull cylinder straight out.
Ford wanted to sell me a complete set of locks for big bucks and that did not include labor.
The release pin is fairly obvious if you get the new cylinder and look it over before you try the R&R. If you have SRS airbag, the process is more involved and somewhat more tricky.
