42-47 Bed Box vs. Later

I'm trying to decide whether to redo my bed box (bottom rot) or get another. Can't find middle x-members for '47 but lots for '48-50. Are they dimensionally the same. I've seen lots of 40-47's with '50 beds (incl. fenders) which tells me they fit. Are the front and rear x-members the same as well (thru '47 vs. 48 up.) Are the bed sides slightly different as well (indentations, pockets) ?

Also can get pretty decent beds for about $1000 (no rot, brought from out west), but may have to plug fender bolt holes if '48+. Would you guys weld new bottoms on the sides and front, buy x-members (have 1, but ~$180 for other 3) or just bite the bullet and get a decent one ?

P.S. Original bed is in pieces w/rotted x-members long gone (I stripped about 8 yrs. ago).

Might give Northern Classic Trucks - Reproduction parts for your antique Ford truck . a try. They have brand new complete beds for $1750. I have seen their stuff and really like it. Not some cheap knock off stuff. They used to have a link for just bed parts, but I did not see it when I just went on there to get the link. Might want to give them a call and see if they still have bed parts.

I have a 1952 F2 that I would trade for the bed, fenders, and running boards for my 47 F1.

I am using a '49 bed. Other than the fender holes I think the only diff is that the small lower pieces in front of the fenders is a part of the bed side, not a separate bolted on piece like in the 42-47s. Welded up the old bolt holes and drilled holes for the 42-47 fenders.

Im thinking of getting this bed and filling in the holes like 46yblock did. Any advice or has anyone else used a 50's bed on a 47 half ton?

After starting this, I did a lot of research. The specific bed that is referenced does not have the stamped sides like '50 down. Thus, your '42-'47 fenders won't fit properly because they are designed to wrap around the stamp. '48-'50 fenders also have this design, while '51 up are flat, since the beside is also flat. Look at Mack Hills and Northern Classic for a better description and picts.

46yblock used a '49 bed which is the same as '42-47..

The '51 (and some late '50) up beds were fairly similar all the way up to 1972.

Your right on the money. Looks like the sides are stamped. Did you end up buying a new bed or repairing yours?

Repairing....

About page 15 is where the fight starts... Then I took a break for the '51. Hope to get back on the '47 in about 3 weeks.

Hey John, it looks like according to the map you are not more than a couple of hours drive from New Alexandria Pa. There is a guy that has a salvage yard there with many parts for the 46-47. J.T.s ANTIQUE TRUCKS & VEHICLES maybe he has what you need. check it out.

Thanks, been to JT's in my decision process (from Projects - 47 1/2T)

"Went to look at the beds JT had in New Alexandria, PA (about 10 '42-47, 3 or 4 more 48-50). For the price $850-$1250, I didn't see a lot of time or $ savings. Most had a little rust holes popping through and the front panels never survive the 65 or so years very well (water always drained poorly if facing downhill and if in a snow region, always packing into the seam against the bed.) So I'm gonna redo mine and maybe get a re-popped front." (08-11-2011)

JT has a lot of stuff, and some great starter projects. Also, If I was starting with nothing, then I would have jumped on what JT had to offer!!

John, Thanks for letting me know about JT's, I was thinking about driving up there to check out what he has. Now I think I will go ahead and get a complete bed from Northern Classic trucks. Its tough to come up with the price but its complete with bed wood and you can get stainless hardware and strips. I have purchased many cab parts from them and have been satisfied with everything.
