I have a 93 nonturbo with auto trans with 300,000 miles. When my engine is cold it has more power and has a louder diesel sound. It is lacking in power compared one I use to drive and am trying to figure out why. It runs and idles fine it just doesn't have power. Now that it is in the 90's every day it seems to have even less power. I don't know how old the injectors or the pump is but it does seem to have a little bit of as skip every now and then but if your not paying attention you'll miss it. It does not smoke.
Is my injection pump wore out and the heat causing its tolerances to loosen?
with that kind of mileage and not knowing the history of the engine, your best bet would for sure be a tune up.new injectors/ip and timing set.
with just 70k miles and a truck used for plowing,my truck saw the benefit of a tune up.
age and hours used all count against these medium ware items as well.my injectors were a total mess, though the ip was likely still ok.i was trying to fix a fuel economy problem, which happened to be a rear wheel issue, however like you,i didn't know the history really,so im glad i just tuned the whole thing up.she's some happy now,so am i.
with fuel prices being insane, you just can't run any vehicle today that isn't kept right up on.the cost is much higher to run them de-tuned than keeping everything fresh.......by a large amount at that.
of course with higher miles, before i invested $ to tune it up,i would first start with a compression test.though these engines can last much longer than 300k,you have reached the life expectancy of the engine.....technically speaking.so long as she has good compression,id tune 'er up and run 'er myself.
If it has more power when cold, I'm betting the advance plunger on your ip has stuck or your timing is retarded, how many miles have you had the truck? Are the pump and injectors still painted gray?
How do I know if the timing is retarded? I read on another thread and someone described theirs as "sounding like a gasser" when the timing was off. I think mine is a little quieter that most of the idi and it is louder cold now that I think about it. By louder it has more of the diesel rattle to it. I have had problems with air in the fuel line at start up and have just thought that was causing some of the symptoms but maybe I am putting the wrong symptoms with the wrong problem?
the only way to know if the timing is off,is by having it checked with the correct diesel timing meter.
the cold advance is set when the engine is cold and make more rattle than when its off, despite where your timing is set at.
so we can tell you to advance it so it rattles more when cold/cold advance jumped on,but how will you know just how much rattle its supposed to have when cold or warm?
even those of us with timing meters....i should speak for myself i guess....can't tell the diff between a couple degrees by just listening.i can hear the diff a little, but i can't tell which way to go without looking at the meter.im totally clueless, and just 2 degrees could mean excessive piston wrist pin ware, and or as much as 2-3 mpgs lost and lord knows how much lost power.take it too far blindly, and you could melt $80-100 worth of glow plugs.
engine timing isn't like horse shoes and hand grenades.closes doesn't count for much.
20 years ago with fuel prices that we all hated but could still live with....well ok why not? but today with record breaking fuel prices that are killing whats left of this poor economy? no way man.not if you drive much.
Good luck finding someone to time it. I in Salem Or and called 2 Ford dealer 1 said the diesel mechanic never hand needed to time 1 in 20 years the other dose it by ear. I finnally found a shop that has a timing gun I hope. They are a big truck shop we will see Monday. Advance it a little and see what happends. I would still run cleaner 1st.
Wow you guys sure have trouble finding guys with a timing meter, my guy is about 20miles away, but he rebuilt an injector and timed it in about an hour, took him 3 tries. I was at 21/2* off but I knew it was retared but I couldn't turn the pump anymore without the right wrench, he set it to 5*, but I forgot to ask what rpm that was at.
But just to note at that 21/2* off idle injection noise/clatter was nonexistant, It was kind of nice it was really quiet for a few days. Its far from scientific but if you don't have any clatter knock at higher rpms it may be retarded
