I have been thinking about a new f350 deisel. What can you guys tell me about the maintinece and the cost of the filters and stuff. What kind of oil do you use. I have a larger boat with 2 3208 cat deisels that i maintain but have never done so in a pick up. We have a 95 chevy dually stakebody at work that gets oil changes only and hardly any maintenece, gets abused by the workers and it keeps on ticking. If i by one i will be towing 10000 lbs and possibly 13000 pounds so not sure if i would go gas or deisel. Initial cost is not that big of a concern so cost would not stop me from buying a deisel truck. So whats the cost for an il change done yourself. Oil, Filters, Fuel fiters and how often? Any info would be nice to hear.
Oil is about $100/change for a good synthetic. But a lot of people go 10k+ miles between changes (you can read up on that here). Oil filters are around $20 etc.. All the filters are about what you would expect.
Are you considering a new 2011 f350? I can only give you exact info on my year.. maybe you should post this in the 2011+ forum for more help
Ok sounds good. My air filter is about $25 but it is an aftermarket one. I believe my fuel filter was around $15 too. Nothing is outrageous, except the oil, but that is as expected with all diesels. You can prolong that by using synthetic and having it tested at around 5k miles.
I havnt owned the truck long enough. I just put in synthetic yesterday, before that I ran dino oil for 5k miles. I'm going to pull a sample in another 5k and see what happens.
Trey is right in line, it all depends on were you order stuff from too, you get get good deals online if you order two or three filters at a time and so on. Clay is a great place to get a lot of stuff to. He carries the fuel filters. I just run the Dino oil in mine, change every 5,000 and it runs me $60 to do it myself. I feel the biggest things with diesels is preventive maintenance, when you wait until they break it seems to be twice as expensive.

Thanks buddy!
I'd like to go on record saying there is nothing wrong with dino oil. When I took mine out a few days ago it was visibly dirty and left lost of gunk on the top of my oil drain pan. But it never caused any problems. I only switched to synthetic because I like having options, and I put about 3k miles a month on my truck and that makes for quite a lot of oil changes, so stretching them out is something I am interested in.
I hear ya. My oil turns black as soon as I put it in, but I am a maint freak, so I don't worry about it.
Oh yeah. I had to drain 1 qt today (I put in 16qts=4gals. It was easier than 15qt containers) and it was already black with less than 100 miles on it. It was like mable syrup, translucent in a small stream but when it was all together looked almost black.
Color doesnt worry me on these trucks, it was the little flakes that came out. Just means its doing its job

I'm running Shell Rotella T6. I chose it for its good reputation, and availability. It was the only full synthetic in the proper weight stocked at AutoZone (which is down the street from my house). It was I believe $26.99/gal.
