So I decided to swap out my oil bath air cleaner for a k&n open air cleaner. I have a 400 6.6L Motor on a 1978 Ford F250. I part number for the filter is E-1290 but I can't seem to find the eleven inch assembly that goes with it. Does anyone out there know?
So a 14" filter that is 3" tall will fit? If so, then that sounds like the better way to go! Do you know what flange the neck flange spec would be for a 1978 400 6.6l with a stock 2bbl carb? or what the max height could be?
The standard opening is 5-1/8 inch. Offhand, I can't think of any typical air cleaners that will fit a 4-bbl that won't fit a 2-bbl. There's tons of clearance under these things and a 3-inch tall version will do you fine. Anything taller, well, looks goofy to me.
Now the question is whether the air cleaner assembly you need will be a dropped, flat, or raised opening. A dropped opening has an opening that is flared upwards and intended to clear choke housings, emissions equipment, and linkages. Meaning, it stands up and away from the carb to provide clearance.
The oil bath air cleaner on my rig had a raised base so it was snug over the carb. I had a spare flat-based Edelbrock assembly and it works/looks good on the engine. Take a look at your base and it should lead you to conclude what you can go with.
If it is raised, then it can run raised, flat, or dropped.
If flat, then flat or dropped.
If dropped, then your only choice would likely be dropped.
Lastly, you may need a longer air cleaner stud but sometimes it'll unscrew enough to expose some threads for the wingnut.
I've never seen an oil bath, but on my 400 with the stock 2bbl/air cleaner, the fram equivalent of a dry filter is pn # CA 351. That might give you a little bit of a place to start
Thanks a ton for your input! I'll check out the air cleaner opening and research the part number. I can't wait to see what the new air cleaner will do for getting a little bit better engine performance. This is my dad's old truck and we pull a 5,000 lb travel trailer around with it. Hoping it might give it a little more pep.
