I have a 78 F150 w/a built 302 and c6. I just recently bought the M5OD (M5R2) trans out of a 88 f150. I have a few questions as well. What are all the parts im going to need and is the swap easy? Also , do you think the trans will hold up to my 302 (320 hp and 340-50 tq) I know the swap has been done , i just havent seen it done on a built engine. If not i still would like to run a 5 speed. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
well you would either need a cross member for a manual tranny, or modify your existing one. plus the all of the clutch junk, clutch pedal, neutral safety switch, a flex plate, slave cylnder, the drive shaft modified to fit. and the m5od is a good tranny and all, but reverse is geared way too high. if your dead set on a 5 speed, a zf 5 speed is a great tranny. and will bolt right up to where a m5od was. just the driveshaft needs to be lengthend to fit. it has granny 1st, and the reverse is alot better than the m5od. the zf you would want to look for is from a newer (early 90's) f250 or f350, with a 351 or just a small block. if it has a 460 or 7.3 diesel, it wont work. hope the swap goes well.
and the zf5 would most likely hold up to your 302 alot better than the m5od
Trans, master, slave, line, manual pedal set for 73-79, the small arm from the 80's-90's clutch pedal that connects to the master. Using that makes an easier swap with a quick cut and weld to the old style pedal setup. You'll need to position and cut a hole in the firewall for the slave as well. It's pretty snug to the brake booster.
I'd suggest running these Clutch adapter with a braided -3 AN line. Much easier to accomidate than a molded line from a different era truck.
Thank you very much fellas , well i dont know if im gonna be able to find a zf5 becus i spent all my money on this m5od haha, and i think my old man would get pissed if i buy another trans and throw it into the garage along with a bunch of other crap ive bought . again thanks, the help is highly appreciated.
320HP infront of a M5OD will not last very long.... a stock EFI 300 6cyl can break one of these!
I'd very seriously consider selling this one and finding a ZF5.
The M5OD will do fine, so long you don't abuse it....at all. But with 320HP, that's just asking for abuse, so M5OD won't like that.
But if you are set on it, before you put it in, replace the 3 rubber plugs on top, behind the shift tower.
They leak as you drive, and is the reason why many of these transmission didn't get very far in life....
Heres what i'm talking about. Factory plugs are rubber. I think Ford has a replacement kit with copper plugs. The rubber ones will just dry and leak again.
thanks man , well i think we are just gonna stick with this tranny. Im goin to get a dual friction clutch as well to relieve stress and not allow the tranny to slip as much. maybe that will help? but along the lines of strength , i was told if you regurally maintain these trannys they last a good while. im going to replace those plugs also, because i hate when something doesnt work like it should.
