I posted this in the hvac section and did not get any help.
I just bought a one owner 2001 lincoln navigator a couple of months ago with 49,000 miles and it is like brand new! with it getting warmer here in oregon I decided to test out the ac today but it would just blow the same temp as the air out side (about 70-75) I could not here the compressor kick on so I looked under the hood and it was not running (clutch) I shut it off and tried to spin it with my hand and it spinned freely. I then checked all the fuses related to the ac and they were all fine, so then I did the eatc self test and no codes came up. does it just sound like it needs a recharge? if it did not have enough refrigerant would the compressor not kick on? anything else I should check? I did drive it around for about 20 minutes with the ac turned up all the way and that did nothing.
The compressor will not come on if your system is very low or empty which means you probably have a leak in the system. Get a can of R-134 and put it in the system. If it leaks, you're only out $10 and you need to locate the source of the leak, if it cools and doesn't leak, get a recharge kit from the local parts store. Wally Mart has them too for $35 - $40.
