Question Frame diffrence between 64 & 66??

Hey Friends,

You guys may recall a earlier thread I made looking for advice on starting my 66 project truck(can be seen here). I bought my 66 with a good looking frame but no bed, I quickly found acquiring a short bed style side was very difficult and costly. This led me to expand my search not only to just beds but complete trucks. I was able to pick this beautiful 64 for cheaper than most of the beds only I was seeing on the net.

As you can see the body is in good shape and the frame is in good shape. I also noticed some rear springs that I don't see on my 66. I plan on consolidating the best parts of each on to one truck and then just parting out whatever I have left over.

So this brings me to my question what is the difference between the 64 frame and the 66 frame. Are the differences enough to make me stick to the 66 even if the 64 appears to be in a little bit better shape?

Thanks,
Dave

Well the 64 has a straight axle up front and the 66 has twin I beams. From the rear cab mounts to the front they are totally different. You can't put a 64 cab on a 66 or vise a versa. It can be done but you have to move the cab mounts around.

Thanks for the Info.

I wouldn't be planning to move the cab only the bed. So what is the advantage of the twin I beams?

If you're going to build a basically stock truck, the twin-i-beams will probably give you a better ride and it's easy to convert to disc brakes & power steering from the "73-'79 trucks because they use the same suspension. The '66 also has 115" wheelbase instead of the 114" on the '64. That means the front tire is centered more in the wheel well rather than looking like it is set back too far.

If you intend to modify the suspension, the '64 frame would probably be easier to switch to the Crown Vic cross member or other aftermarket choices for lowering and better handling.

Great info I do plan on modifying the suspension down the line. I guess it probably makes sense to go with the 64. Now I just got to make up my mind and stick with it

Yeah i'm convincing my self. 66 has a much better interior and has disc breaks in the back. I also like having a 66 mustang & a 66 F-100 but I gotta be realistic and work smarter not harder.

You can definitely modify the '66 suspension, too, if you want. I understand wanting to have it match your Mustang. You'll just have to cut the big crossmember out depending on what kind of suspension you use. The '66 also has an advantage in how & where the steering column mounts in the cab. Are the floor boards and cab mounts good in both trucks? I see the '64 has a lot of rust on the front edge of the hood and some around the drip rails on the roof.

Actually I think the 64 cab has less than rust than the 66 lol they both have floors in great shape

Since there both short beds the 64 box will go on 66 with no problems. I have 64 with "wrong box" on it.
