Bad Car Names

What is the worst model name for a car you have heard? There are some bad ones out there! The idea comes from a podcast I listen to called "Car Stuff" from HowStuffWorks.com. Their podcasts are great and I recommend all of them!

I'll start!

Chevy Nova: Sold great in the USA. Not so well in South America. Apparently the literal translation is the Chevy "Does not go"

Statutory Grape: In the 1970s Dodge added a purple color to the color options for the Challenger. They were origionaly going to call the color "Statutory Grape" they ended up going with "Plum Crazy."

That's because it is.

"Gremlin" is the first that comes to my mind..."Probe" follows closely.

I was cruising down the road in a taxi in Hong Kong once when we passed a car dealership. I really can't remember the auto maker anymore. The name of the car pasted up on the front window was the "Genetic Mutation."

I'm sure that in Chinese, that car name made sense. But it sure didn't translate to English very well.

Ford Probe -- target market was apparently younger women (whoops)

Automotive reviewer of legend Tom McCahill had a comment on the Olds Toronado:

He said that we all know what toro means, and apparently nado has something to do with water. So, he figured that it meant "floating bull"
