Brake problem

I give up. I have a 89 F150 that makes a grinding noise under medium to hard braking that sounds and feels like I have no pads on my front brakes. I pulled the calipers and the pads and rotors look ok. There is a small chamfer in the outside edge of the pad on the driver side, and I mean small, it's only a 32nd wide, so I don't think that's my problem. Just for kicks, I pulled the hubs on the rear and the pads and hubs are fine, the pads were a tad glazed, but I roughed them slightly with sandpaper.
Next I replaced my front bearings. Bearings only, not outside races, as these looked and felt ok.

I still have the grinding noise and feel through the brake pedal. I suppose I could simply replace the pads on the front and see if that fixes it, but I'd like to be sure that is my problem before I do it, I'm getting kinda tired of taking those wheels off.

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks

Do you drive in the mud or sand or water forge alot? Just shootin at the moon, but try cleaning up your calipers(take them out and clean them and hone the bores also clean the pistons off) then bleed your brake fluid out. Flush from pass rear, then driver, then pass front and driver front. Fluid build up ie water can cause steam in the caliper meaning a grinding sensation. I understand that this may seem far fetched, but hey at least I tried.

Have your had rotors chacked to see of they are warped. Some times under high heat conditions such as heavey braking the rotors warp. Did you re-install the anti rattle clips. I bought a 1993 F150, the guy I got it from had re-done the front brakes and failed to put hte clips back on and it had the same feeling that you are discribing I assume that the 89's have them. :-)

I would replace the pads and have the rotors turned. Did you look at the back of the rotor as well? Did the pads look broken, or glazed? It may just be time for new parts. You can also try organic pads as they are less harsh on the rotors. The down side is they dont last as long as metalic. Hope this helps.

I hadn't really thought about the rotors being warped. I suppose thats a possibility. They are not grooved or gouged, but I guess they could still be warped. The pads are not cracked or glazed at all. I AM missing an anti-rattle clip on one of the calipers, so that is a definite possiblility. I will get one back on and report back - Thanks!

I got the anti-rattle clip on tonight and it helped a little, however, I noticed on the passenger side wheel, there seems to be some play when I have the wheel jacked up and grab the top and bottom and wiggle it. side to side as well.

The wheel bearings are brand new - put 'em in 5 days ago. Do I need a new spindle assembly?

Sounds like worn out ball joints to me.

Hmmm.. ball joints. Well, heck, I don't know squat about front ends, but I've got a shop manual on the way. I'll give that a shot.
I don't know what you call them, but there are two joints, one above of the other, that the spindle assembly bolts to. the movement is mostly in the lower of the two, it seems to me. There is also movement in the joint that connects the steering arm to the spindle assembly. This looks to be a good learning opportunity.

Thanks

Those two joints you described are the ball joints. Also, try replacing the pads with "Gold" series pads, or whatever is the medium-top quality in the area. I have had very good luck with these, and find that they are the quietest, between the Bendix Metalics, and the el cheapo brands.
