I'm doing this soon and will upgrade the rear diff cover to the new style aluminum one from the 2008 diesel. Do I need new longer bolts as this says...

I'm sure partsguyed could get them for you, but here is another option that is easier if you want the "click and buy" option. This page has both the cover and the bolts.

Both PartsGuyEd and Riffraff Diesel are site sponsors and both great guys. I've bought from both of them.

5/16-18 NC x 1-1/4"lg. I suggest stainless, because steel on aluminum will rust fast. Any good hardware should have these. I like washers. There won't be any on the factory original.

I decided I wanted a laugh this morning so I called the stealership. Rear diff cover is $79, and the bolts are $15.40 EACH! Hahahahahahahaha! Forget stainless, these must be platinum coated! I could have sworn I asked them for a diff cover for my SD, not my bmws!

I think they are made out of forged uranium, actually.

LOL :-)

I'm thinking about buying them and making womens jewelry since these MUST be special for the price! I can see it now, when I visit Vegas all the women will be wearing my platinum and uranium coated earrings and necklaces with ford stamps on the bolts. I'll know if they're fake if the bolts start rusting hahahahahahahaha!

Thanks for your help. My 99SD cover rusted out and started leaking. Oil looks good at 155 miles. Drained about 3 quarts with no flakes observed.

The oil pan was also rusted but it looks like I caught it in time.
