High River rancher Richard Wambeke and friends bought an ad in USA Today to express support for the war in Iraq.
Fed up with the Canadian government's position on the war in Iraq, a group of Albertans is taking out an $18,000 US advertisement to tell Americans what Prime Minister Jean Chretien will not: "We support the U.S.A."
The group of about a dozen citizens, led by High River resident Richard Wambeke, is putting up thousands of dollars to run a quarter-page announcement in USA Today next week.
"We want to let them know not everybody in Canada is turning a blind eye to what is going on there," Wambeke said. "When our prime minister took a stand saying that we are not in support, it sure seemed to us a real missed opportunity."
"We don't have anything more than a few armaments. We have lots of good men and women, but we don't have any military budget to do anything with, so we could at least have said that we support them, and he let it slide," said Wambeke, who has already put thousands toward the cause.
Entitled "An open letter to the people of the United States of America from their neighbours in Alberta, Canada," the ad reads, in part: "Many of the citizens of Alberta, Canada, wholly support the United States of America in the fight against terror and tyranny and in defending the principles of democracy, freedom and equality on which the U.S.A. was founded.
"We are grateful and honoured to be your neighbours. We deeply regret that our nation's Liberal leadership chose not to commit Canadian military resources to the U.S.A.-led coalition forces to liberate Iraq."
After the war started, Wambeke began calling friends in High River, Lethbridge and Edmonton to see what they could do.
As word spread of the plan to advertise in an American newspaper, Wambeke's phone began ringing and donations have been steadily coming in.
More than 7,000 people have visited the group's Web site at www.wesupporttheusa.ca , since it was set up Tuesday morning.
There, Canadians can sign an online petition urging the prime minister to voice support for the war.
"We decided to show our strong support for our American neighbours and friends," said Wambeke, himself a descendant of immigrant from Oregon.
The group is also considering placing an ad in Canadian newspapers.
Just in case they take it down before anyone gets a chance to read it...
