Hello, I just registered to this forum. I'm still learning how to navigate it so please tell me if I'm not doing this correctly.
I have a 1969 F100 6 cyl. 240 manual trans. with limited slip differential. it's an old Florida Department of Tranportion vehicle. It is driven less than 15 miles a month. Yesterday the rear end of the truck started chattering very strongly when turning. I think it's the clutches in the limited slip differential not wanting to slip. Before I tear into it I wanting to try changing the lube. I need to know what the lube capacity is. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Pull the differential plug and stick your little finger down in there. If there's oil on your finger when you pull it out, you will likely need only one bottle of diff juice. If not, get 2 or 3 and a hand-pump at Wallworld. Pull the plug, stick the hose from the bottle/pump in the hole and go to town, stopping every now and then to repeat the finger check. I stop and put the plug back in when I hit oil with my little finger in the hole up to the second knuckle. Beware...diff juice stinks, so wear old clothes.
Thanks tmcalavy. I want to get it all out. It doesn't have a drain plug and I don't want to pull the front section. I'm gonna have to pump it out and I wanted to make sure it's all out so I can start with a "clean" case before I put new fluid in. That's why I want to know how much it holds. Sounds kinda nit-picky, huh. My wife tells me that all the time!
jhooch, I was able to get someone to check that code on the door. It's "A2". Is that any help? There is a tag on the housing but I didn't want to put my friend through crawing under the truck!
If it's the original rear-end, it's a Ford limited slip with a 3.70 ratio. Looks like capacity is around 6.5 to 7 pints (I usually fill mine until the fluid is level with the bottom of the fill hole. With the limited slip, it's imperative to use the limited slip additive. Without the additive, the clutches in the rear diff will chatter. Good luck.
